  • Police keep watch on roving pack of 300 cars

    source

Police kept tabs early this morning on a roving group of "street racers" and their souped up cars, which numbered upwards of 300 at one point when the pack headed up H-3 Freeway toward Kane'ohe at about 12:30 a.m.
I wonder if I go out when that was happening, if they'd target me too?
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

Only if you run with a large pack of others. 300 cars at 12:30 AM? Yeah, I can see them watching that.

I think it was a night car cruise. I heard about that.

I was in Hilo one day when a caravan of motorcycles roared thru. When the traffic light turned red for them, four motorcycles blocked the intersection to let their group thru. No police escorts, just a bunch of riders on a Sunday cruise.

One car broke thru the blockade breaking the parade of motorcycles and with that gap everybody who was stopped drove thru. Nothing those four bikers could do but yell at the cars, who just yelled back.

There's one thing with having your friends going out on a weekend cruise around the island. It's another when it becomes a traffic hazzard.

300 cars requires a parade permit doesn't it?

Cops know that the street racers have been known to "shut down" long stretches of straight road to hold drag races. All it takes to block a highway is like 20 or 25 cars. Once blocked the road up ahead is wide open to drag racing until the police find another way in.

I have personally witnessed this along the H3, Diamond Head Road, Kalanianaole Hwy out by Sandy beach, even Kapiolani Blvd right by McCully.

Before cell phone days CB radios were used to warn of "cops coming"...

Nowadays, I suppose cell phones work much better.

I remember one day while driving along Kalakaua as it ended by Kapiolani park by the water fountain. Some kid on a cafe style motorcycle was driving so slow he had to put his feet down to balance himself. I was right behind him in first gear and bogging down in my VW Scirocco. If I tried to pass him he'd block my way and I was getting F*CKIN' PISSED OFF AT THIS CLOWN.

I called the cops figuring he was trying to block the road as we drove up towards the lighthouse going Kokohead bound on Diamond Head road. He must have seen me call because he took off like a bandit. When I finally got to the first lookout point after the lighthouse, there he was with two more of his friends and they were waiting for me.

Oh right three Japanese kids on motorcycles were going to intimidate me...right. I pass them and they begin to harass me by speeding up and tailgating me. I'm still on the phone talking to the cops while this is happening so they tell me to keep driving and they'll send a squad car that was at the bottom of Diamond head at Monsarrat.

So I pass the second lookout point going downhill now, knowing that there's at least one cop at the bottom. I pull away and the three bikes take off after me when I slam on the brakes letting all three blaze past me right into the three cops waiting at the bottom laser speed guns illuminating the bikers.

Oh revenge is sooooo sweet as I give the entire bunch the shaka sign as I drive on

              great story.

Reminds me of this one afternoon I was being harassed by some idiot in a Chevy Corvette. It was moderate traffic and I had been schooling him in some lane change etiquette along Nimitz Hwy. He was pissed and wanted to race.

We both got lanes at a red light and he is fully calling me out. I see a solo bike cop pull up behind me about 3 cars back so I make eye contact with the idiot in the corvette and tell him "OK then, one time"... I held up my index finger.

When the light turned green I acted like I was going to pound it and he smoked his tires and took off while I just grandma'd it off the line.

The solo bike cop went lights & siren on and nailed the idiot in the vette. After he pulled over I drove by super slow and laughed my ass off in his window before punching it a little without pissing the cop off too much...

              Good memories.
