        Re: HT Brainpower Needed: Ratings

        Hi again.

For the February puzzles' difficulty ratings, I'd like to do something like:

        picking pineapple
        picking mango
        picking opihi
        picking ______

First, how would you rate at least the three I've provided from least difficult to most difficult?

Second, what can I put in that fourth space that's appropriate for publication? I'd like some different spin on "picking," such as "picking up a date at ____" or "picking through _______" but I'm not sure how to word it. In fact, I think "picking pineapple" and "picking mango" are too close in theme (both being fruit), but since one is picking up and one is picking down, I guess I can live with it.

        Any ideas?

        picking a private school?
        picking a new year's party?
        picking an ukulele?

        -----

Okay, I just thought of one for March, so I could use some feedback there, too.
        How about something like:

        yarn lei
        money lei
        crane lei
        _____ lei
        ?

can haggle! now, it should be embarassing to haggle there, but i have done it when justified, (small snag on da shirt. broke leg on da vase, whateva) and they said, ah yea what da heck, take it for that.

                Re: HT Brainpower Needed: Ratings

                For February I'd say:

                1. picking mango, because although you often have to deal with mangoes that are 40 feet above the ground, they're otherwise easy to handle.

                2. picking pineapple, because of the pokiness of the fruit and sharpness of the leaves and the fact that you can put your lower back at risk by picking up from ground level.

                3. picking opihi, because they stick to the rocks for dear life and one errant wave can wash you away while trying to pick 'em.

For March, I'd probably use actual flowers if they haven't been used before, maybe (in rough order of effort needed to make them):

                1. maile lei
                2. plumeria lei
                3. carnation lei
                4. ilima lei

                  Re: HT Brainpower Needed: Ratings

This structure would make each rating unique in their play on verb and noun references, with the increase in difficulty levels making realistic sense...

picking plumeria (easy) - verb: harvest, noun: flower > thing > non-edible
picking a new year's party (medium) - verb: choose, noun: party > place > non-edible
picking an ukulele (difficult) - verb: pluck, noun: musical instrument > thing > non-edible
picking opihi (challenging/crazy!) - verb: gather (or harvest), noun: seafood > thing > edible

I was going to say "picking a life partner" for option #4, but I like Pomai's restructuring much more.
