  • Electric Skateboard

Down at the pier today I talked to a guy riding an electric skateboard. A little less than 4 feet long, a little less than a foot wide. He said they cost about $1100 and get 30 miles on a charge. This could solve a lot of commuting problems. Obviously it wouldn't work in all situations or for all people but it is only necessary to get a relatively small percentage of cars off roads, streets, freeways, for traffic to flow smoothly and to whatever extent it cut gasoline use it would help the environment and the economy.

Sounds interesting. But all in all, it's just a novelty/recreational toy that won't even make a dent in rush hour traffic. The 21st century college student isn't just lugging around a backpack with textbooks. At the very minimum, he/she is likely carrying around a fragile laptop or tablet device, in addition to change of clothes when they go to work at their job. Thus, they need to commute with some kind of vehicle that will allow them a way to safely and efficiently transport their belongings.
