  • Melveen Leed @ IMP

If you like good music and good fun for the ultimate in cost (FREE!), hit the International Market Place every Saturday 11am - 2pm and catch Melveen/Ms. Kalohe give a three hour non-stop show full of laffs and sounds as only Da Tita can dish it. She's on keyboards/uke/percussion/no telling! and is accompanied by her excellant guitarist/singer/arranger stage partner Tito Berinobis, plus a soundman who helps add to the instrumental sound (I think...), and all the talented friends and strangers that are willing to sit in, plus some fine hula. Something for everybody with taste.
I made it there at noon but missed the Hawaiian medley opener, which is what I really went for.
Among the folks that graced her stage was 89 year old stage veteran, Ann McCormack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1owUSdnLQ4 and her actor son Don Stroud, who was cool on bongos during many #s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Q_K...eature=related.
I'm talking the best current entertainment in town!
Mel was in a cast boot having recently sufferred a broken left ankle and it didn't slow her down a bit, giving something for everybody with an eclectic set list that no doubt varies wildly each show as she has a massive catalog of styles and tunes. It's mostly off-the-cuff/spontaneity, done with feeling, and is all for us THE PEOPLE. Their version of the standard, Summertime, was a highlite amongst highlites.
I hadn't seen her in ages and it was truly a welcome sight. She is awesome, especially when, rarely, something goes wrong or she forgets words, because she knows how to turn those into positives that make you hope for even more goofs.

Next year will be her 50th anniversary of performing since the age of 14, and TODAY IS HER BIRTHDAY!

    Thank you, Melveen!

I listened to her perform at Chai's on her birthday. That gal looks good for a 68 year old, and her voice is the same as when she was 30. Boy, she can still hit them high ones. Her story on how she broke her foot was pretty funny too.

          Way to go, Mel!

Today's show was another great time, Mel brought up some of her new inlaws and one lady blew everybody away with some awesome singing and another with some fine hula.
              No MM in sight.

              She's 67.

I think what's happening is the music situation in Hawaii is so bad for quality players that she essentially has few venues any more, much like most upper crust performers, unless you're willing to be a junk jukebox. And while Mel's show could be classified as a jukebox in that she covers a lot of ground to please the masses (and herself), it's certainly not junk. It's a down time for most everybody in the biz, so I'd say it's sensible penny-wise self promotion on her part, and part an open opportunity to give back to her public for the decades of support, which she always mentions during the food court sessions. Her last 'room' was recently at The Elks Club, and when they supposedly remodeled... she and all the other performers that got paid were let go and not brought back. It's a rough time for our (forced into fading) stars, so support them whenever you can!

She'll be having a full production show at the Hawaii Theater, Sept. 11 http://community.nahokufestival.com/...ith-your-heart with a band, and the staging will change for each style of music she plays, courtesy of a top staging production mgr./friend. Typical of her giving nature, this will be inclusive of a benefit for a worthy cause.

Plus, she does Chai's Bistro/Aloha Tower on Sat. evenings. And still with a broken ankle!
