  • Space Station viewing tonight from Hawaii!

The International Space Station will shine at minus 2.8 magnitude, which is brighter than any other dot of light in the nightsky except for Venus.

    Sunday July 5th, 2009
It will appear in the southwest at 8:47pm
Be at it's highest point, 60 degrees above the NorthWest horizon
(that's 2/3 of the way up in the sky) at 8:50pm
And the fade from view at 8:51pm

Just letting you all know what I've been told...
Life is either an adventure... or you're not doing it right!!!

Thanks Menehune Man. This is what it would look like from a 10 inch diameter telescope.

Thanks for letting us know! Too bad it was too cloudy out my way to see it

I got to see it over Kauai!

It flew on a more southwest to east route. about 6 minutes of visibility.

There'll be a few more chances this week, cloud cover permitting:

Wow I should have gone up to the Onizuka Astronomy center at the 9,020 ft level of Mauna Kea tonight instead of last night. Hmmmm maybe tonight I'll take the family up there again. Up there you're above the clouds.

I dunno... I've dragged the family out to see these before and gotten the "YeahsurereallycoolDad, can I go do my homework now?" attitude and the spousal "There he goes again" eye-roll.

So now I just sit on the lanai by myself with a cup of coffee, enjoying my childhood memories of reading Heinlein & Asimov while knowing that absolutely no one will interrupt me about anything for at least the next five minutes.

Sometimes we have space-station passes at my house five or six times a week...

My kids are space junkies and they love hiking so going here is a great way to see the stars, hike and get some fresh air.

That ground track plot you referenced is the best way to know where to look. I was struggling over:

date/time duration Max elevation approach Departure
                      7-7 8:01pm 5 min 55 degrees 11 deg ^ SW 11 deg ^ NNE

Note: Don't just look NW at 8pm, the space station will pass the NW point about 8:04, so wait a few minutes before you give up.

Lucky the leeward side! Should be awesome.
