VHS tapes could always hold more and were cheaper than Beta. Beta decks had some incompatibility issues. Video stores regularly held VHS. I think the porn story is a bit overblown, probably because it's fun to talk about. BTW, guys, all these disclaimers about never having watched icky porn...

Good point. The broadcast standard Betacam tapes are the same cassettes as Betamax, and so are Sony's High Def tapes. So obviously Sony had it right with the actual nuts and bolts of their technology as some thing from the original Betamax live on in today's broadcasting.
