Japan has a very different culture from America.
We all saw how amazingly civil and law abiding the Japanese were after the 2011 tsunami. I doubt Americans would have reacted the same.
One thing to keep in mind is Japan roughly has twice the suicide rate. Perhaps instead of committing violence against each other, they turn it in on themselves. I guess some would find that favorable.
Instead of "handgun murders" they should compare "murders". I'm sure the U.S. would still be higher, but not as dramatic.

As for handgun murders, the U.S. rate is 200 times higher than Japan's.
