While its not a plan, if the SSA is stopped or meets with too much resistance, MCG Capital would sell KGMB.
They value their asset at $22-$25 million, which is a decent price, and MCG would make back close to its initial investment since they already got about $12.5 million selling the fee simple property the station sits on.

RE: "Media Council" From a simple country boy, some common sense observations:

1- KGMB is arguably the #1 station in Hawaii
    2- KHNL is arguably #4
3- KGMB laid off 20 or 30 people 1 year ago and has laid off another 20 or 30 now.

    Therefore:
1- If KGMB was generating enough revenue to maintain it's position, then it would not want to "SSA" with anybody and lay off more people. Not to mention moving everything from it's iconic Kapiolani location.
2- Therefore, I deduce that the "SSA" is a last ditch effort to stave off bankruptcy and avoid complete shutdown.
3- If "Media Council" is successful at blocking this "SSA" I forsee a real possibility of complete shutdown. Which would leave only 3 major stations operating and lots more people out of a job.
4- Therefore, I fail to see what benefit to the viewers of Hawaii "Media Council" would produce by adding legal challenges and expenses to an already hobbled operation.
5- Therefore, I challenge "Media Council" or anybody else to produce a realistic plan to save this valuable local business.
6- It seems to me that "Media Council" is in a lose-lose battle. By that, I mean if they win the challenge, KGMB may shut down and leave three stations anyway. So realistically, what is the point?

I know there are wise-a** cynical people out there who say television is obsolete and useless and tv news is a joke anyway. But the fact is that tv is still a mainstay of entertainment and information for a majority of people. Furthermore, these stations provide a real honest wage and living for dozens and dozens of people. For these people, it is not a joke or a game or some kind of righteous crusade. It is real life trouble.

    That's a bad move on KHNL's part.
Now there's an open invitation for the FCC to investigate, or at the least fine the station, which will help in any potential fight against the shared services agreement.

Members of The Media Council (Former Hawaii Lt. Gov. Jean King and former Hawaii Newspaper Guild President Lucy Witecktried) tried to view KHNL's public inspection records, were given the runaround, then flatout denied. Not being able to find them is one thing, being denied access is completely different. I could insert a joke and say the records were lost in the move from Sand Island to their new studios in Kalihi, but it really isn't funny.

KGMB was much more accommodating, but a copy of their own FCC license could not be found.

Also this Thursday KGMB News Director Chris Archer and Media Council Hawaii's Chris Conybeare will discuss things on "Insights on PBS Hawaii". If anyone wants to ask questions or make comments about the shared services agreement they will be able to during this program. Joe Moore was asked to appear on the program but declined his invitation.

I was wrong, investigative reporting does exist!

    http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar...ommuting+costs

There are frequent fliers, and then there's the administrator for the state's mental health centers.

The holder of that job, Wayne Law, has been regularly commuting three times a week from his home on Kaua'i to O'ahu with added trips to other Neighbor Islands for about 12 years.
That's an average of 150 roundtrip airfares a year, which along with per diem, rental car and parking expenses are paid for by Hawai'i taxpayers. In the past fiscal year, his travel expenses totaled nearly $40,000.
Department of Health spokeswoman Janice Okubo said the commuting expenses started when Law took the job about 12 years ago.

Don't know him , I never was good at math, so I'm not going to say it's easy to take those classes. I think the one's who have gone on to get their certification should be applauded, they want to learn more about their craft, not only for themselves, but their viewers as well. What's wrong with that?
But also there isn't anything wrong with not taking the classes either. Some stations brand themselves as severe weather stations, some even come out and say they have certified meterologists via graphics or voiceovers just as they come on the air.

We all have different opinions, which is great. Dan Cooke is one of the best, serious, like I said earlier if an anchor slot is open or he needs to fill-in to do news, he's ready to go. He can report, do weather, anchor, can just about do it all and he is a veteran in this business. I wish he was still doing the news and I'm glad he is back.

    Aj

A.J. McWhorter, a collector of film and videotape cataloging Hawaii's TV history, has worked as a producer, writer and researcher for both local and national media. His column runs on the first Monday of each month in the Star Bulletin.

Hit the link its self-explanatory. It's where most of our weather people get their "meterologist certification"

    Great story DaleP.
I really loved the radio business before the conglomerates got into control.
Very good discussion here today, its like a bunch of polite people sitting around, drinking coffee, talking story... My thoughts on the "shared services agreement" are that the ratings will matter less in regards to local news due to the duplication, so the stations network shows will have to pull the viewers, something that is frankly not under the control of the local affiliates... It would be smart to move back to separate news staffs when the economy improves. Also does anyone actually differentiate between the KHNL news at 10 or K5 news at 9? Identity is everything, the melting together will work only if they can create differing identities.
As far as personnel, I agree; being able to ad-lib is paramount and the young un's generally can't do it. The cute, actually beautiful, weather girl from Hilo should stay, my wife and I both like her, we have spoken... The sports Lady who can't breathe in time to her copy should either learn to breathe right or be gone... Maybe she can join a choir to learn to sing, it teaches what she needs to learn. KITV I can't stand at any time, maybe getting new writers who produce a less sensationalistic copy will help but the plumbers rule is at work here.
    I hope my contribution contributes.

Dan is excellent and I know his radio background helps a lot.

Many years ago, I did fill-in work for a Mainland TV station. One evening they called me in at the last minute to anchor their "Evening Magazine" program. I figured it would be OK because everything was on TelePrompTer and all I had to do was read the copy for each segment and throw it to someone in the field. Thirty seconds into the broadcast, the TelePrompTer died...and to make matters worse, the assistant running over with paper copy tripped and scattered the script throughout the studio. We went to commercial and I jotted some notes on a pad. When they came back to me, I started getting signals that we were having problems with the live shots and would probably have to go to pre-produced segments on tape. I think I did everything but tap dance that evening.

Somehow, we finished the show without most of the viewers ever being any the wiser. But, the only reason I was able to get through that half-hour broadcast was because I had "working without a net" radio experience. Of course, that was before radio became just liner cards and voice tracks.

It turned out to be the most fun I ever had doing a TV program...though I don't think I'd want to do it on a nightly basis.

Some of the best TV personalities (and Dan is certainly one of them) have radio experience.

But with that said, I'm gonna tell you now. Don't expect Hawaii TV viewers to go along with a channel boycott. As long as KGMB is a CBS affiliate that carries hit programming like CSI, Survivor, college/pro football, and March Madness basketball, fans of those programs will continue to watch it. They're not likely to suddenly stop watching these shows just because disgruntled employees start picketing outside the station offices.

For better or worse, that's just the way it is.
Frainkie, I think you got us nailed. Quite astute.

We certainly love to spout justice, fairness and earned status (as opposed to imposed), but as long as we have our (variously):
CSI, football, H-Warriors, L&O, Medium and/or other distractions, we will adapt/adopt the Novus Ordo Hawaiianum.

We will survive. We WILL crumble to corporate interests. We WILL be happy, so long as they keep tossing the candy to the crowds.
Isn't that how the system works?

Isn't is nice to be a lamb?

Interesting. I always thought she was the best, and for a long time she was the state's only graduate meteorologist. As a lifelong sailor, weather is very important to me and I found Sharie to be the best. (I do worry about her health though, with all her frequent coughing.)

The various weather honeys are okay for their role.
I can't stand 'em. Most of them are nothing but weather readers and their segments are often full of mistakes that show they have no clue about their subject.
I used to cringe whenever Trini Kaopuiki did the KHON weather. (And so did Joe Moore, many times.)
