He wasn't an on air guy, but he was a longtime President/General Manager at KHON, so very much involved in the news business, Bill Snyder died in Arizona nearly a year ago, I didn't see a local obit in the papers, but wanted to let people know about this:
Returned from Northern California yesterday, I was watching KGO in San Francisco with Dan Ashley the lead anchor whom I know, sports with Larry Beil. Hawaii sidenote regarding Ashley, he was hired by former KGMB news anchor Jim Topping when Jim was news director at KGO.
I watched KTVU, out of Oakland where Phil Arnone worked out for several years after he left KGMB, one of their reporters is Patti Lee, news anchor from the early days of KHNL.
BJ Sams is a good friend of mine and was recently visiting the islands for a couple weeks, we had lunch together at the Outrigger CC. I also took him around to show him the places he used to work which of course the buildings no longer exist replaced by the Naru Tower (was KITV) and an uncompleted construction project what was to be Whole Foods (was KHON).
He visited with former colleagues Emme Tomminbang, Barbara Tanabe and others. He's thinking of spending more time in the islands now that he is retired. Emme posted a photo of BJ and their recent get together:
When I was in Little Rock last summer BJ and I got together and I'm telling you everywhere we walked or went to, they all knew him; it was like I was with the mayor or something!! He is that well liked and respected in Arkansas. My son was able to get a VIP treatment at the Little Rock Peabody Hotel's famous duck show because of him. He told me about this project where he was donating his papers, which I think is wonderful. Bob Basso was in town the week before I was, doing one of his Thomas Paine tea party gatherings on the river front, he didnt know BJ was working there at the time. BJ and Basso were co-anchors on the KHON Eyewitness News for most of 1973.
