  • Fresh sardines on Oahu?

High in omega 3 oils and a rather tasty fish to do up, are there any sellers of fresh sardines in Hawaii?

Huh? Sardines are born in cans?

MMmmm!! I love sardines, esp the ones in the mustard sauce.
Eat 'em up, eat 'em up!

Much easier to eat already cooked in the can...accompanied by crackers and a Coke!

      I gotta check the pantry---

I don't like those little bony sardines. We get Greek white bait which are also tiny and bony. These things are not popular here.
Herring is about the smallest we like, especially the roll-mop type in pickle juice. What's the name of that larger type of sardine which begins with a 'P' ?

Brush with olive oil and grill em til crisp and pop the whole thing into your mouth, pull out the head which (hopefully) stays attached to the bones all the way to the tail. Voila!

Now I remember, they are called Pilchards and come in tins of tomato paste. Not bad with spaghetti, bell pepper, onions and garlic but still I wouldn't rave about them.

you can get iwashi at marukai, but since it comes from japan, i believe it's frozen. you can always try tamashiro's or pacific seafood in waipahu but i've never seen it there.

if you've never tried iwashi sushi, you should. compared to its canned cousins, sardines served up as sushi have a fresh and briny taste. eric and i have had it at mitch's sushi definitely. i'm pretty sure we've also asked for it at sushi king (which we're currently boycotting) and zippy's pearl city and got it.

                  I guess it's off to Tamashiro's then.
I've loved the canned one's w/green chilis, mustard, tom sauce, for decades, but want to give some Mediterranean recipes a try with them fresh.
