  • Hawaii and the Oscars

With the Oscars about to be given out....

I've been wondering which film, shot in Hawaii, was the first to win an Academy Award. Does anyone know?

Has a person from Hawaii ever won an Oscar?

"Sweet Leilani" won best song in 1937. It was written by Harry Owens and sung by Bing Crosby.

1934's "Here comes the Navy" was partially filmed aboard the USS Arizona, but I don't believe it was in Hawaii at the time. It starred James Cagney and was nominated for Best Picture.

Does anyone have any Hawaii Oscar trivia?

Bette Midler and Nicole Kidman, both born in Honolulu, have won oscars.
