Since Hawaii is a smaller state, it should be easier to take a portion of Lottery ticket purchases and distribute it to public uses. Of course, since the lottery system focuses on money, the biggest emphasis is putting someone trustworthy in charge of that operation. For the interest of not busting the "lottery bank," the portion being distributed to public use should be an up-front portion, and a lucky winner will get a jackpot that is only a fraction of what's in the bank. That means some idiot can't say the jackpot is $500M unless the lottery collections from previous draws exceed $500M.

As far as gambling is concerned, I thought the powers of Las Vegas commerce had a direct influence on Hawaii. It always looked like a scratch-each-other's back deal where cheap flights would go to Vegas, and in return, Vegas offered vacations to Hawaii... thus promoting each other's tourism. If Hawaii opened gambling on their own, I don't think it would have the financial backing to even come close to competing with Vegas, and would be detrimental to the Hawaiian economy. Besides, in Vegas, it's always 110 degrees outside, so their purpose is to keep everyone inside to gamble; why would Hawaii try to keep everyone inside to gamble when their focus is on getting people outside to enjoy the landscape? No win there.

It could be a goldmine or disaster, either way real easy. My $ says the State would f it up good if it went beyond a basic lottery. They should have kept the Oceania floating restaurant and turned it into a one-time-only gambling house. They could do the same thing with saving Fisherman's Wharf, extending it instead of tearing the landmark down.

I have to agree with you, Ron. Shipboard gambling — and only shipboard gambling — would be my first preference. But since Kaonohi did not include that option in his poll, I chose what apparently is the most popular choice: a lottery to benefit a specific purpose.

Sorry TuN, can't win 'em all.

I'm interested to know, from you and Ron both, why that selection appeals to you? Is it that it will impact poorer people less? Keep it off the streets? I guess I don't understand it that well.

If there is going to be gambling, let's put slots in airports. I'm getting ready to leave for the airport for work, and heck why now be able to sit around playing a slot machine while killing time? And, it would be a good way to drain tourists of their last few vacation dollars before they fly out of the state!
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

The poor will always find gambling if that's where they're headed and it will always be on the streets, so minus 'moral' concerns, the overriding objections towards legal gambling have been out of fear for crime/corruption. My take on 'isolation' gambling is to try it out on a limited basis, see what problems emerge and how well we combat the knowns/unknowns before allowing every nook and cranny to have a slot machine or leering shark. Keep it classy and contained.

Wow. You people must live in isolation.

WE ALREADY HAVE GAMBLING IN HAWAII. HELLOOOOOOO!!!!!

Cockfighting, Football Cards, Poker Clubs, Internet, etc etc.

For those of you who think gambling would be bad for the people of Hawaii, I have some news for you. Anybody that wants to gamble here can gamble on just about anything.

I'm certain at least some of you don't get it at all.

Sorry Tim, I thought it was clear that we were talking about legalized, organized gambling of the types mentioned in the poll.
I guess not to everyone. Maybe I need a new proofreader!

Try all of the above — but you’re just scratching the surface, Kaonohi. Let's look at Ron’s take:
Originally posted by Ron Whitfield View Post

This is an important point if we are going to allow organized gambling into our state. We already have organized crime, and if we’re not careful, the second most corrupt state after Illinois will become THE most corrupt state.

But more importantly: why not create an immediate payoff for our economy: the revitalization of our cruise industry! More than one ship has left Hawai‘i never to return because we cannot consistently fill the seats. Shipboard gambling would be a BOON for the maritime community. Much of the allure of Las Vegas is just the chance to “get off this rock” for a sort of “working vacation.” Why not accomplish that “local style”?

If someone can afford to fly to Vegas, eat fancy buffets, and sleep in a posh hotel, they sure as hell can afford to stay home and book a cruise. The last time I checked, this is a significant segment of our island community — much more than just the “rich.”

                      Buy Hawai‘i first, brah!

We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.

I'm all for all gambling. Legalized, etc, etc.

Vick and Uncle Boy. dogs, chickens, horses, dice, cards, bingo. no limits. all fun.

Somehow the puritans always have the loudest voices.

                        And even THEY love Vegas.

                        Makes no sense at all.

You all might want to listen to an interview with Professor Earl Grinols. He claims the numbers don't make sense. It will end up being a net loss for the public.

I also think the idea of gambling for education is a bogus argument. First, I don't see any evidence that sending more money to the DOE will fix anything. There's bigger problems there. Second, there's no guarantee that it will result in greater net funding. More likely the legislature will cut back public funding so the net result is that money they were spending on education will now go and fund their own pork projects.

Regardless of what some ivory tower academic has to say about it, shipboard gambling is a win-win. Those who participate can afford to do so, since this will only attract those with enough in their wallet for a Vegas vacation. So, they were going to spend the money anyway.

Even if the state only breaks even on the revenue, the cruise industry will be making more money, and can afford to hire more local workers. That in itself, is worth at least a pilot project, to test out how this would work.
