Mesa Air Group files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
    http://www.starbulletin.com/news/bulletin/80688267.html
Mesa, a low-cost carrier which at one time dropped one-way interisland fares to a rock-bottom $1, has had a rocky existence in Hawaii.
In April 2008, Mesa paid Hawaiian Airlines $52.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by Hawaiian that alleged Mesa had misused confidential Hawaiian information obtained during Hawaiian’s bankruptcy in 2004 to enter the Hawaii market in 2006.
And in November 2008, Mesa settled a 2007 lawsuit with Yucapia Cos., Aloha’s former controlling shareholder, in which Aloha accused Mesa of misusing confidential information that Mesa obtained as a potential investor during Aloha’s bankruptcy. Aloha also accused Mesa of predatory pricing designed to run Aloha out of business. Mesa paid Yucaipa $2 million and issued Yucaipa 10 percent of Mesa’s common stock.
By that time, Aloha, which had filed for its second bankruptcy on March 20, 2008, was out of business, calling it quits 11 days later

Gee, what a surprise ..... so-called "predatory" Mesa is in financial crisis. Now that Aloha Airlines is gone, it seems the only big player left is Hawaiian Air. (Yes, supposedly the Hawaii business part of Mesa will be unaffected for now, but I'd surmise it is only a matter of time.)
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

Besides the bad will (or bad karma) they are making by having overhead bins that only accomodate "less than industry standards" sized carryon luggage, and then charging $20 to check in a standard size carryon. Many airlines have smaller bins and will check in the carryons at no charge. Due to that "money grab" to unsuspecting passengers, I'll never fly them again if I have a choice.

Hawaiian's 767 center aisle overhead bins are also smaller than industry standard. The side aisle bins will accomodate the larger (but standard) carryon luggage but the center bins won't and that has been a problem when people use the side bins for small items and the last passengers are left scrambling for overhead storage so the airline attendant starts moving stuff around. Passengers start complaining that passengers are moving their hand carry to other bins, sometimes several rows away from the owners of that luggage.

Really airlines should enforce the one handcarry limit, so others won't be left hunting for bin space.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

If anyone at Hawaiian Air was giving high-fives to each other over Mesa's bankruptcy, then I guess the two flight incidents this week were a case of Bachi.

First, it was the HAL flight from Portland to Maui that had to be escorted by a couple of F-15s. And now, a Las Vegas to Honolulu flight that had to be diverted to Los Angeles. These passenger related incidents may have been out of Hawn. Air's control, but it's negative publicity for them, nonetheless.

I've not heard of Hawaiian Air celebrating Mesa's problems.
As for bad publicity because they had problem passengers, I don't hold that against the airline. What the traveler can expect, though, is that airlines are going to become stricter on who they let fly (such as, cause a ruckus at the counter, and you can count on not boarding). Ditto for drinking too much alcohol before or during a flight, bye-bye seat assignment.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

I guess you've not heard of any. But I have.

Of course maybe it's not bachi. Still, it's strange that these two flight-diverting incidents happened in the same week. Some coincidence.

Ummmm, one flight escorted back to the city of departure by a couple of F-15s. Another one making an unscheduled stop at LAX. These incidents go well beyond something as routine as an altered seat assignment or a boarding denial.

Is it legal for airlines to ban those troublemakers for life?

That and monopolizing the inter-island flight service.

Also, cherry-picking which flight routes are most profitable.

And you wonder why Molokai don't feel the Ohana spirit from the rest of the state.

I guess I caused confusion in how I wrote my statement. What I meant was that incidents such as the two flight interuptions could become part of the reason that airlines become stricter on who they let fly.
