  • What things do I need in order to travel to neighbor island?

I've been here in Oahu for about 5 years and I haven't been to the neighbor island yet, so I was wondering what I'll be needing in order to travel.

I'm thinking of going to Kauai.

Do I need to bring passport (I have Korean passport), social security card, school ID?

To board any airplane these days, my understanding is you need a photo ID.
I would THINK your passport would suffice for this, but, geez, would you be REQUIRED to bring your passport on a neighbor island flight?
It would be best if you call the airline you'll be flying, to see what the requirement is for your situation.
Identification issues aside, you need lots of money, time and patience to travel inter-island these days, from what I'm hearing.

If you're a Korean national, I'd say you'd better take the passport.

What about like the ID card? Will school ID do? or social security cards?

From Wired News, here's a kinda interesting ID on a guy who experimented with trying to get through the security process without ID...

Yeah, I was just going to bring that up. Showing your ID at airport security is not REQUIRED and not a LAW. But if you refuse to show your ID, or don't have your ID, you will be subject to a more detailed search. That Wired article is very interesting though. I don't know if I read it in that article or another one related to it, but one guy mailed his ID his home and attempted to fly back home from San Francisco without it. The security agents didn't seem to put up a big fuss about it, but said he would have to be searched more thoroughly. The funny thing was that he went through security faster than if he had shown is ID.

Wear slippers. It's easier to take off and you aren't scrutinized as much as shoe wearers.

I'd hazard a guess at money and a driver's licence...there's no bus, usually.

Bring at least one credit card as most hotels and car rentals won't accomodate you without some form of plastic. Budget car rentals will use the Sears Card though.

A disposable one. You can have the film developed into a JPEG disk for digital viewing. Plus if your rental get's broken into, oh well it was just a disposable camera and the thief probably would just leave that behind as there's very little value in a disposable camera.
