  • What opens rar files?

My downloads of rar files only open a link to Internet Explorer, what can I do to download a working file, or, what program opens these?

    Re: What opens rar files?

    What computer?

Are you sure you have all the files? One function of .rar archiving is splitting up larger files into a series of .rar files; when you double-click to open the first, it looks for the rest, unarchives them all, and joins them together into the original file, if that makes any sense. So if you're trying to unarchive something that's supposed to have four .rar files and only have one of them, sometimes things can get hung up.

Also, your computer doesn't know automatically what to do when you double-click something. You have to tell it to open .jpg files with an image viewer, or .mp3 files with a media player. Your computer probably came with most of the standard definitions, but IE might be the default for files it doesn't recognize.

I have something really good on my computer at home but I don't remember what it is. On my laptop, a MacBook, I use something called the Unarchiver.

I think all I have is the title, I'm doubting the files exists in my computer, the knife (thanx, Craig!) won't open them. Pop-up sez the file could not be decompressed entirely and the the archive might be - corrupted/incomplete/encrypted.

Anything else I can try doing before tossing out all these dloads?
If I try dloading these files again is there something I can do that will = success?

          Re: What opens rar files?

Yes. I can't do the research for you right now, but if you Google something like "online zip extractor," you can upload the .rar file to examine what's in it, and sometimes extract it on the webserver, then download the individual components, unarchived. This is a useful service if you ever receive a zipped file from someone and aren't sure what's in it; the online extractor can tell you if there's anything in there you want or if there's anything in there that's harmful.

Try it, and if you don't have any success by the time I get home from work, I'll try to help you out and point you in a possible direction.

            I'll try it, much appreciated.

Some sites use files that are mostly no problem to hear, but others are total rar and so far are useless, lots of good stuff now junk.

            I read this...
"I have noticed that it happens on sites that don't allow direct hotlink downloading and must use some referrer or cookie system. I noticed this resolve on a couple of downloads from Rapidshare (non-premium) and MegaUpload (non-premium) and a few other servers where people were hosting on free hosting services which normally don't do hotlinking".

                Thanx

I went with winrar yesterday and I think I'm having better luck, but maybe I'm just avoiding the hard core rar dloads. However, of the rar files that I already have, they aren't opening yet, and I'm still figuring out how to get that done, if it even can...

                    Re: What opens rar files?

unrar. Last I checked the rar program to compress files into the rar format costs you, but the program to uncompress .rar archives, unrar, is free.

                      Re: What opens rar files?

Does it keep them in a format that will open for me, and in better sound? My ears havn't noticed any less quality yet, but better is better...

All I've done so far was free too, with winrar.

by the way, in the world of downloading, you might wanna have/know about this program

                        http://hjsplit.software.en.softonic....FQYLbAodiR35IQ

since some people split up large files (e.g. movie files) into a lot of small pieces and you may need this program to put them back together again.

                          Re: What opens rar files?

How about when I extract a file? It states to "please insert disk 1 of 0 into drive C."

i've personally never seen that happen but if you do a google search, there are lots of hits like this one:

i don't know if they address your particular situation but it's a start ;-)
