  • tips to sell stuff at swamp meet

If I don't land a job this weekend, I'll just help my Mom sell her embroidered stuff at swamp meet.

    1) does the swamp meet let you run electronics at your 'booth'?
    2) anything I should look out for? (I'm learning from my computer job how to 'properly sell things')
    3) any other general tips?
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

Hmmm...I initially thought "swamp" was a typo. It appears it wasn't. Adrian? It's a "swap meet" unless, of course, the Aloha Stadium location used to be a swamp, in which case...how appropriate!!!

Not to embarrase you or anything....

      I am somewhat confused...

You did mean "swap meet", right?? or am I actually wrong??

P.S. don't let anything discourage you, just keep positive on your job hunting.

Sooner or later, something (or an openning for a job) will come up.

I would think that moonshine and gator-themed items would go over big at a swamp meet.

Here's my advice based on my experience as a seller:

          1. Know the forecast. Even if it rains, there will be customers.
          2. Be prepared: table, chairs, mats, plastic bags, umbrella if you don't have a tent, fruit, water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and most importantly a smile with a positive attitude. Oh yeah, bring CHANGE!
          3. Go early. Try and get a stall mauka of the bathrooms, but in the middle. (Does that make sense? ).
          4. Know your product. Know your prices (be realistic), and be prepared to negotiate.
          5. Have FUN! It's a great experience.

My very first experience in selling at the swap meet was so enjoyable that I continued to go every Saturday for almost a year! We were there at 6 a.m., and by 7:30 we were nearly sold out with $300 in our pockets. Our goal was to purge our homes, and earn enough for gas and lunch money for the upcoming week. Now, it wasn't like that every weekend, but I encountered many friendly souls and enjoyed meeting different people, talking story, and finding some treasures of my own.

          Best wishes to you Adrian!

Ahhh...those were good days for me.

silly me. I'm sorry, yes, its "swap meet".

And it looks like we need about a week to prepare because we gotta get the price list ready, gather the tables, make a few more designs, and of course do the things other people mentioned.

Finally, I think I'll check the place out this weekend. I don't want to dive w/out looking.

Re: tips to sell stuff at swamp meet

Since you're allowing yourself preparation time, here's some other advice:

                    KNOW YOUR PAYDAYS:

1st - 5th: Government checks (Social Security, etc.)
                    7th & 22nd: Most hotels.
                    15th & 30th: Government paydays (State, etc.)

                    BE FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR PRICES:

Know how to read your customer, if you think you can make the sale by lowering your price a dollar, go for it!

Also, I wouldn't price your items, allow them to ask for the price, this gives you the opportunity to let your personality shine through conversation.

By the way the State of Hawaii paydays (except UH faculty) are the 5th and 20th.

And swamp meets are always held at trailer parks, yeah?
                        Rule #1: Location, location, location.

                        .
                        .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

SS checks are staggered thruout the month...mine is received on the 4th Wed., my cousin's on the 2nd Wed...as examples. I don't know if other government entities have adopted this practice.

In my experience, disability checks are on the 1st, some recipients are paid in some kind of alpha grouping, and DHS is on the 5th.

The fourth Wednesday? So really, you're receiving for the upcoming month?
