    I think it was $5.! But, in 1961, that meant a lot to a teen-ager! Now that I think about it, there's another interesting twist to my story above. The racist mom and her kids, while they left abruptly, they left without making a big scene. They got up and they split unlike racists of that era who were very vocal about their hatred...at least the one's captured on film on the news! I, otoh, went off like a pound of dynamite! Hindsight is always 20-20 and my behavior was certainly less than stellar. It did allow me to sleep nights, tho'!

      From mid high school until I finished college I worked at a pancake house every weekend and all summer in a tourist town at the beach in the Southeast. Put myself through college, learned a little Greek (very little ), had LOTSA Yankees asking for "one grit to try." And it was the local hangout for the politicians and "coffee drinkers." I wouldn't be a nurse now if it wasn't for that job....

      I love pancake house food. Yum.
