According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has now confirmed those cases. Incidentally, I am now sick with some kind of flu, so all you stalkers can take a step back.

Eh, those Ft. Worth people. So my husband's boss is working from home now because of this and decides to take her kids to Disney World. Seriously. Which, yay? Great vacation or bad idea? This just doesn't seem like a smart idea, not because I'm freaked out b/c of the flu, but just because it just doesn't.

Default H1N1 (Swine Flu) is here

CDC confirms three cases of flu in Islands
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar.../90505063/1352
"With the confirmation of these three cases by CDC, Hawaii joins 38 or more states reporting confirmed H1N1 Influenza A or swine-origin flu activity," according to the Dept of Health. The people people either recently traveled to the mainland, or were family members of a traveler.

Does this news affect your travel plans? Is it something that is in the back of your mind when you are in an enclosed building full of people, like a movie theater? Do you have any concerns?

What, if anything, will you be doing or not doing now that the H1N1 (aka Swine Flu) has hit Hawaii?

I did wonder why I was being shouted out, that perhaps I had committed a major HT sin in my error of posting to a new thread. And, it did make me think about another thread's question, "Where Did All The Nice People Go".

Meanwhile, thank you admin for graciously moving my posting to where it belonged.

Well thank you Amati for your thoughts and questions, much appreciated.
I have flown from HNL to Dallas and now to MPLS/STPAUL. Last night I was with 20,000 people at the Elton John/Billy Joel "Face to Face Tour" and it was amazing and no one was wearing masks or such. I leave on Saturday for Chicago but have no mass hysteria public events on the docket. My plans could not have been affected and I saw my physiatrist the day before he said people like me in relatively good health should be o.k. What I can tell you is that so much travel induces major fatigue and the only thing I'm in peril of is traction as my back and legs are ready to give out from pain!

Given that this is a combination of bird and swine flu wouldn't a more proper name be the flying pig flu?

Talking Swine Flew?

OK, now that pigs can fly, let's take advantage and do all those things "they" said we could only do "when pigs fly."

Costa Rica confirms 1st swine flu death

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Costa Rica's health minister has confirmed the first death from swine flu in Central America.

Maria Luisa Avila tells The Associated Press that a 53-year-old man died early Saturday. She says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed he had the swine flu virus.

Mexico has recorded 48 swine flu deaths, two have been reported in the United States and Candanian officials say a woman who died last month had swine flu.

bcs i'm home with sick (per my MD, it started off viral, then i caught a bacterial respiratory infection. there's a little bit of fluid in my lungs but it's not to the point where i have pneumonia, thank goodness!), i thot i'd bump this thread: we're up to 44 confirmed cases. lots of good information on that link, btw, including hints on how to stop spreading cooties at work.

now pardon me while i go blow some more snot into tissue, rub some lotion on my red & flaky nose, and wash my hands for the umpteenth time. *misery*

I'm bored.

It's early morn and no moa nuttin to do. Quiet. Only the three legged doberman at Golden Coin barking at da wind. I'm sad cause I won't be going to my daughter's and son-in-law's wedding re-newel this morning.

Everything has no taste but I take it. *yuk*

Da Flu is the pits. Swine or Regular go away.

That's good advice above. Plenty of liquid. A few paracetamol and be kind to yourself. I'd say to put your feet up and take things really easy. You can fight against a cold but its sounds as if you have a virus. So Auntie Lynn, just Give in. It has to take it's course.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hey! Barry!! Mahalo foa da new word you made me google!
"Paracetamol, known as acetaminophen in the United States, is a painkiller that is popular throughout the world because it is remarkably safe and it does not irritate the stomach."

My fever broke. (Applause) But I still can't go to the festivities this morning. I'm still contagious.

I'll continue with Rest, Liquids and SciFi Chanel!

Exclamation Re: Swine Flu

Well, hold on to your butts. Looks like there isn’t going to be a “summer drop-off” for this disease. Incidentally, I’ve had the flu twice in the last month. Many more than usual of my co-workers have called in sick during that same period with — you guessed it — the flu. Glad I bought my masks... now if I can just find a store that still has hand sanitizer.

i'm never happy to hear someone's been sick, so i hope you and your coworkers are better now and stay well.

i've explained before about masks and how they're essentially useless in preventing the wearer from getting sick. they're better for helping the wearer not get others sick. most non-healthcare workers don't wear regular store-bought masks correctly and the ones that have any efficacy are the ones requiring fit-testing.

as for hand sanitizer--if you have plain old rubbing alcohol, you have hand sanitizer. washing while rubbing the soap in vigorously in between the digits, under the nails, in the palms and the backs of hands for thirty seconds or more is more effective.

frequently wipe down commonly used surfaces with antibacterials if someone in the household or office is sick.

eat healthily and get as much sleep as you need. stay home if you're sick.

that sort of thing. h1n1 is no more deadly--in fact, it's less deadly, if i remember correctly--than the normal flu, and it's completely treatable if caught in time and you're otherwise a healthy person.

Default Hawaii's first swine flu fatality

Story posted this afternoon on the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s website:

An Oahu woman in her late 60s is Hawaii’s first fatality linked to swine flu, state health officials confirmed today.
The woman died on June 19 at Tripler Army Medical Center, Department of Health officials said.
The H1N1 influenza infection, or swine flu, “likely contributed to underlying medical conditions that caused the death,” health officials said in a news release.
