  • What is this?

I've got a cherry tree (I think) in my courtyard, but the cherries aren't like any cherries I've seen before. For lack of a better description, they've got ribs and look like teeny tiny little red pumpkins. Anybody know what these are? :

      Yep, that's what they are.

In Florida they're not trained up into trees though, they're kept cut down and used as hedges.

Wow, got my answer in less than an hour. HT rocks! Thanks, Mike and Peshkwe!
I got a chuckle from seeing that the Advertiser article echoed my description of them as looking like little pumpkins. (I mean the cherries, not Mike and Peshkwe.)
I can also tell you that birds love the Surinam cherries. Whether in the tree or on the ground, I've got at least 10 or 12 birds at any given time.
If anyone wants any of these cherries, let me know. I've got zillions of 'em.

          EAT 'EM!

They are delicioso, healthy, prolific --- but:

Keep the invasive Glaber ants away! They will invade the trunk root and kill the tree.

No thanks. I've never been a fan of cherries of any sort.

You got 'em. Gee, you're so far away -- what, two miles? Check your PM list.

That would be Eugenia uniflora. Fruit is high in vitamin C and aphrodisiac for old farts like LikaNui and matapule. How matapule know these things? In Tonga, mo bettah Cherries!

That's the funny thing about em....they don't taste like cherries at all, good though.

                    Re: What is this?

Those are Surinam cherries. Kinda sour but make good jellies. My aunt had a big tree/shrub in her yard and made all kinds of stuff with them.

Just a quick update -- the birds around the cherry tree are putting on one helluva show. Now it's up to a couple of dozen (and three or four different types of birds) at any given time, and some of them are getting very territorial and chasing others away.

Heheh. Wahiawa post office has a small tree in their parking lot along the fence. Had to check the PO box and saw the tree was fruiting so I picked what I could for the daughter. She likes this kinda stuff.

I got that growing in my backyard too. Verrrryyy tart indeed! Funny though the birds don't attack mine. Not even my chicken!
