Re: Best Part of Today
I know today just started, but.
Remember this thread in the Kaukau Korner section, about that surinam cherry tree in my yard? Surprisingly, it's still putting out new cherries, though apparently it was supposed to stop about a month ago. Lots of birds visit the tree, still.
Well, I'm sitting outside right now having my coffee and reading the last versions of the two newspapers. Two birds just flew down a few feet away, an adult and a juvenile. There was a surinam cherry on the ground, and the adult started picking at it while the juvenile sat a foot away with its mouth wide open. The adult would take several bites, then hop over to the baby and feed it mouth to mouth, and the process repeated many times. When the cherry was almost gone, the adult flew back into the tree to shake another cherry loose. The baby had apparently watched and learned, and it hopped over to the remains of the first cherry and started picking at it.
Seeing a baby bird learn how to eat for apparently the first time, from just a few feet away, is a terrificly sweet way to start the day.
