Lightbulb Hawaii Radio Listener Games

Upon an unrelated discussion with a reader on my food blog blog recently, they brought up an early 80's radio station guessing game called "Sterling Silva, Private Defective". She didn't describe the details of the game, only that it was on a rock station, and was the precursor to "Uncle Tom's Treasure Hunt". I'm guessing it was KPOI with "Uncle" Tom Moffatt.

With that, I thought it would be fun to list all the listener games Hawaii radio deejays have promoted in the past and present.

Here's my submission:

“Men are Slime” – 93.9FM by Rory Wild, early 90s era: listeners (mostly women) would call in telling their worst stories about men treating them badly (mostly cheating or being lazy kinda’ stuff). The one who had the worst story usually won stuff like movie tickets. For two. lol

Way back in the early 1970s KKUA radio (690 AM) which was a top 40 station had a weekly contest where you had to predict what the next week's top 20 songs would be. You'd have to send in a letter by mail with your prediction and the person who got the closest would win that week's top 20 single 45 rpm records. I won that once in early 1972 I think. Was very long ago.
I'm still here. Are you?

My memory is kinda sketchy on the details, but back in the early '80's, Perry and Price had a game where you were supposed to call in when a certain song was played.... Or something like that. Anyway, listening folks would "team up" to cover the station 24/7... or something like that, upping their chances of winning. Then the winners would split the prize money.

Off topic, my favorite "radio day" of the year was Halloween, when Perry and Price would play the same voice each year, declaring a bland message of "Today is Halloween". Something so simple left its mark in my memory.

That was a moment of fun, and and also when they'd play the recording of Elvis cracking up during a concert song. It seems that it was recorded live, and a female had gone to the front of the stage and pulled up her blouse, causing Elvis to bust into laughing [no pun intended].
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.
