  • White insects/eggs on house plants

    Aloha Everyone,

I've been trying to grow houseplants in my apartment but these little white bugs (very tiny) cover up all the leaves. This happened to my basil plant most recently.

What are they and how do I prevent them from destroying my plants?
This happens whether i keep the plants indoors or out on my lanai.

    any tips will be appreciated!

They are sometimes effectively eradicated by a mixture of Dr. Bronner's
Peppermint soap mixed with water and sprayed on and under the leave/stem.
This has worked for us in the past.

Here's a website with good information, at least to help you identify the invaders. Sounds like might be aphids or mealybugs.

I agree with leashlaws; that minty soap spray will not make them happy. If your whole plant is covered, you may need to wash the whole plant with mild soapy water to get them all off initially, then spray occasionally to keep them under control. Make sure you get under the leaves, too.

Now remember that ladybugs are your friends; they eat aphids and I bet they would help with other bugs, too, so make sure you don't kill any ladybugs.

You could always harvest the basil and wash off the bugs before use, then the bugs would have minimal plant to attack until the basil grows back. Then you would be ready!

Thank you for the tips and link!
I will try spraying the leaves to see if that gets rid of them!
