  • Popping popcorn

I bought a Stir Crazy poper because Amazon said it was good.
Used Orvill's corn and coconut oil.
Fun watching the corn pop, but it comes out very slightly soggy.
    Taste good.
Orvill's bag popcorn is a little more crispy.
Anyone know of a way to pop and be crispy????
    Are the air popers better????

    Re: Poping popcorn

I love the convenience of microwave popcorn. I usually buy Pop Secret brand.

All you really need is cheap popcorn, a brown paper bag, and a microwave.

less oil? I have an air popper and one of those scaled down model popcorn machine thingies with the wheels which uses oil and both are pretty crispy.

          Re: Popping popcorn

I use one tablespoon of oil.
I think it looks like to little, but thats what the instructions say.
Don't really care for the micro popcorn. To much oil.

            Re: Popping popcorn

Is this one of those pots with the fancy lids?

If so, these pots tend to keep too much steam inside. You need to let out more. The steam is what makes the popped corn tough and kinda soft. I slip a bamboo chopstick under one cover and let it start popping. Once it starts to really go at it, I slide the chopstick further under the lid to open it up a bit more as I "shake" the pot. I don't use the stirrer once it starts popping as it seems to break the popcorn into small pieces. Just make like Jiffy Pop. Doing it this way lets more steam escape and makes for crispier popcorn.

Oh yeah, I don't follow directions. I use 1/2 cup of kernels to 2T canola oil. I also have a small pot on the side to melt about 3T butter on medium low heat. I pour half the popcorn into a large bowl and drizzle some butter and sprinkle a little bit of garlic salt, stir. Pour the last half and repeat. Ono! I use either OR or Jolly Time. OR being the better of the 2.

              Re: Popping popcorn

What we do is to get the popcorn really popping in the pan and then lift the lid and scream as it pops out all over the place. Good fun and the dog gets some that way, too.

                Re: Popping popcorn

I think it also has to do with the speed of popping. We use a whirly pop and it takes a while to get the hang of the heat. If the heat isn't right, the popcorn can come out chewy or weird in other ways.

I wish I had a more scientific comment, but that is from experience. I'm not the popper in my ohana, but that is what I am told.
