Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

Years and years ago when I was in college I worked security at a civic auditorium in Florida (looked just like the NBC). Since I was the least "star struck" of the crew I usually ended up working with the talent. In 3 years of working with rock stars, wrestlers, concert musicians, TV preachers, & Olympic Ice Skaters I was only struck by one.

I don't remember her name, but she had just competed in the Winter Olympics women's ice skating finals. She was predicted to be the easy winner, but in the end finished a disappointing 3rd (Bronze). Since she fell short of the gold medal predictions, she took a gig skating with one of the lower rung shows. Now these skating shows are cast with mostly young skaters, men & women no older than 22-24. With so many young folks travleing together in close ranks, there was lots of comradery & partying among the cast. I was asked repeteadly where the local "hot spots" were that week. They all seemed to be having the time of thier lives except for the Olympic Skater. She was shunned by everyone. I personally saw her snubbed by cast on several occasions. Well, the auditourium is a pretty wide open building, and we had a small family of cats that lived in the rafters, corners, and dark places. One day I saw the Oylmpic Skater with a kitten in her lap, gently stroking it's back. She was beaming. This was the first sign of happiness I'd seen all week (and trust me, by the end of the run we had all seen plenty of each other). With all the expectations she had, and the opportunity to be with so many other young people like herself...the only thing working out for her besides her skating was being able to cuddle with this kitten. In a word, sad.

I still remember this 20+ years later...

BTW Andre the Giant was UNREAL big (his butt was as high as my shoulders), Barbra Mandrell couldn't have been more than 4' 6" tall, Natalie Cole must have been 6' 2", Ted Nugent gave the guards all of the beer from catering, Willie Nelson was a every bit the gentleman (and totally baked), and Jimmy Buffett was the most gracious musician I ever saw when it came to the meet & greets.

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

I gotta resist my urge to state my relation to someone mentioned. I will say that for a while I worked as a seatfiller and as a talent escort (meaning you make sure that the celebrities you are assigned to have everything they need, you get them to where they need to go, etc.) and I can honestly say that only once have I been starstruck and that was with Whoopi Goldberg. I don't know why I was so starstruck upon seeing her and being by her all day. It was just surreal to see her while she was doing everyday things, smoking cigarettes, eating lunch, etc. I didn't do anything stupid but I had a real hard time talking to her, I was such a geek. I did my job just fine though. It was a lot of fun to do that sort of work but you get paid very little for a lot of your time, IF you even get paid.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

I not even going to touch this thread.

Ok, ok, ok. Just a little. hahahahaha

        Famous people. Hmmmmm......

K-den. I know many Famous People but I not going name ~ names.

Being with them at parties, social gatherings as well as in private has always been the same to me. I treat them all the same. Das why they love me cause I no make a big fuss ova dem cause dey celebrities. Infact, there were many a time when I and a certain individual were having a drink or lunch and people would come up and "rudely" bother the person. It became custom for me to be the person's bodyguard and whack whack the idiots.heheheh

Famous people, Celebrities are just like us. Treat them the same. They get enough invasion of their Privacy. They drink, sleep and kaka juss like us. When you get to know them beyond their celebrity "persona" they are much more betta to know and Love.

My time working at Neiman Marcus afforded me the opportunity to meet many celebrities. I've always been rather nonchalant about meeting the famous and infamous. But I will say there are two who stick out for all the wrong reasons: Carole Kai & Tiny Tadani. One is a pitiful attention hound w/a small dog complex and the other is a talentless, condescending diva. I'll leave it to you to connect the dots. =P

Do you remember who this Olympic skater was? I *love* ladies figure skating. Or used to, anyway. Michelle Kwan? Sasha Cohen? Irina Slutskaya? I once saw Maria Butyrskaya (sp?) in Hawaii at a car rental place... she was gorgeous.

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

When/if I see celebs, I leave them alone.

The only autograph I ever got was of Muhammud Ali, many years ago when he came to Hawaii. I felt silly... like, what am I going to do with it?

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

I've only seen celebs in places like PR events or signings where they expect to see fans. In those cases, I try to keep it short and sweet, and tell them that I've enjoyed their work, have a great visit in (wherever we are), etc.

As for chance encounters, I've seen very few, and aside from wanting them to have their space and privacy, I've never seen anyone by chance that I've even been tempted to act otherwise. If the person in question was a Heroes actor, I'd probably give it some thought

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

Every celebrity is different, just as every person you meet is different. Some will play the diva, portraying themselves as being "above" the general public, some prefer to be left to themselves when they are out in public (not at a celebrity event, that is), and some are very gracious when approached by their fans. I've found you are more likely to encounter that last reaction if you are brief, courteous and relatively unobtrusive, as Vanguard described.

My policy now that I don't work at NM is to simply ignore celebrities as I would some of my ex-gfs. I really do wish Tiny would stop showing up at places I go to though. No, I don't want to talk to him and no, I don't want to hear about whatever product he's pushing.

Oh, there are LOTS of folks here on HT who agree strongly -- and vocally -- with you on that one!

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

Hah! On the street I am usually in my own little world. I wouldn't know a celebrity if I literally fell into them - true story. If I am introduced to anyone famous I shake their hand and say "How do you do? Nice to meet you." My problem is that I don't pay attention to names and stuff. So I 've been known to meet people - have whole conversations with them and find out later they were supposedly famous.

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

I have no shame - I will go up to them and ask if I can take a picture with them for my My Space page. Most times, they're cool about it.

I saw Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko from Lost) at the Airport last year - he was pushing his luggage cart along and when I asked him for a picture, he refused. No amount of pleading would change his mind.

My sister-in-law that I was with was like, "who was that?" I was a BIG Lost fan at the time and he was my FAVE character so I told her and she was like, "why don't you just take his picture now?" While he was walking away with his back to me? No thanks! So he quickly became the character that I loved to hate and I was so glad when he got killed off.

I mean REALLY - how hard is it to pose for a pic? It takes only a couple of SECONDS (I already had my camera out of my purse) and he would have had a fan FOR LIFE. I understand that maybe he was having a bad day or whatever but if he didn't want to be recognized, he could have worn a hat, some shades you know... he was pretty rude about it...

                              re: kiwidiva's post

I agree, it can be a bit disheartening when you meet one of your favorite actors and something like that happens, but keep in mind, in Adewale's case, he did play "Simon Adebisi" in Oz. For years, he's probably gotten a lot of weird requests from fans, and it's probably made him a bit jaded (I'm not saying your request was at all weird, but I'm sure he just readily expects them to be so). If you watch Prison Break, you'll know Robert Knepper (T-Bag). He said many people have asked to take a picture while they hold his inside out pocket. He said at first it was funny, but then it got really creepy.

Also, they are completely aware that these pictures will end up on your myspace or facebook profiles. It's another photo-op for them, not like a big entertainment magazine, but it's important enough for them to consider their appearance. Maybe Adewale was worried that he wasn't looking his best and tmz would show him tired and beat after a red eye flight. But I agree, we should all (celebrity or not) strive to be polite and gracious regardless of our answer to such a request.

And I must say I do like having a picture taken with a celeb more than an autograph. I'm therefore hoping that I never meet my favorite actors when they're too busy or otherwise having a bad day.

Re: What would you do if you met someone famous?

I have a sweet childhood memory:

we were in Carol&Mary's (remember that store) and my grandmother was admiring these fur coats (I know, go figure; mink in Hawaiʻi) with the salesclerk by the window. At that moment, a lady was peering into that same store window from the outside. My grandmother gasped "oh look it's Elizabeth Taylor!" and that lady kept on walking.

They didn't run outside to meet her. That lady never walked in. But both my grams and that clerk went on and on about the most beautiful pair of eyes that either had ever seen in their lives (I am frowning at this sentence; thereʻs a verb agreement thang going on, but damned if I know how to fix it).

I was maybe all of eight years old. I will never forget that day in Carol&Mary's.
