Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?

I posted earlier about a little app called "iTunes Watcher." Seems the developer Michael Simmons had pulled it. But I just got a note back from him saying he had put it back online, but no longer supports the app. Installation instructions and the file download are now here: http://www.thoughtanomalies.com/ituneswatcher/manual/

I have installed it successfully and you can now see what's playing in my iTunes, LIVE: http://zztype.com/music/

Installation is very technical, and you need to have a web server configured on the computer where your iTunes is playing (as mine is) in order for anyone else to see what's playing. It's not meant for everyone do be doing. But it's kinda cool to deploy in your office, if you've got a bunch of Macs on the network. (It has to be run on a Mac as it uses AppleScript.)
Make trouble, have fun, do good stuffs.

nice thread. I've mainly got a bunch of Jack Johnson, Ted Lennon, Mason Jennings. A few songs from Weezer, Chili peppers, Strokes, and White stripes. Bob Marley is on there too. But my most played songs are those from the first three.

Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?

My main G4 tower and iPod each have more than 5,000 songs. My iBook laptop has a small 176 song playlist. Here is a list of songs that played on my iBook today (while I was at work). It was a combination of safe oldies and later tonight some newer tracks.

MacMade Easy had a close-out sale on 60GB and 40GB iPod Photos last month. I bought the 40GB model. Apple has since dropped it and now only offers a 30GB and another 60GB iPod Photo.

I had been accumulating a big pile of music over the 3 years since I bought my Power Mac G4 tower in 2001. Mostly ripping and burning my CDs, downloaded a few from iTunes and converting some of my tapes and records to MP3 with Griffin Technology's iMic. (This is why you may see some old out of print music on some of my lists; they are ripped from records.)

I figured I might as well take the plunge and buy one of these things when the price was right... so I did. I still have an issue with the battery life/life of the iPod in general. But I figure if the battery conks out (which it will eventually), I figure to just hopefully continue running it on AC power through the adapter. BTW, mine was the last one to come with the dock/cradle and both the USB and Firewire cords, iTunes 4.7 and the black carry case. I have since bought a few more accessories for it... a carrying case for both iPod and accessories, a small camera bag to tote the whole thing around in and the Griffin iTrip to play music through my cheapo car radio.

So like I have my 5,000+ songs which represent only a small fraction of my total music collection on CD, records and tapes. I been collecting this stuff since 1969. So yes, color me old. I still have 45s, LPs, some reel to reel tapes lying around, 2 8track tapes, and several hundred cassettes of radio shows, personal stuff, family gatherings, small kid time singing and whatevers. I plan to eventually burn all these to CD... have done a few already.

I also have a measly 51 color photos on my iPod. I don't plan to keep too many photos there... kind of use it as a digital wallet for pictures.

And yes, I like my iPod but don't use it that much since most of the time I am either with my G4 or my iBook and both have iTunes. Also I am a bit leary of taking my iPod out and around... I will probably buy the small iPod Shuffle, which seems to be more durable and has no moving parts... I can just tote around a fraction of my playlist of songs that I want for the moment. I have a $10 credit from the Apple Store due to the fact that I had returned an item I bought from there a while back. So I plan to apply that to the 512MB Shuffle soon.

OK.. I probably said more than I needed to about my iPod.

Here is a picture of my iPod:

The one thing I hated initially about iTunes was that it broke continuous medlies such as this into individual songs. It's a good thing that Apple knew about this and gave us the "join" command so that I can combine all the individual tracks to the "Abbey Road" side into one continuous piece.

Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?

An item on KITV 4 News tonight stated that President George W. Bush is an iPod owner. He has his staff install music to his iPod which the newscast mentioned is filled mostly with country music (no one should be surprised at this) as well as several pop and rock songs.

                          From the "Seattlepi":

Bush's iPod tells what's got the president's ear

First, Bush's iPod is heavy on traditional country singers such as George Jones, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. He has selections by Van Morrison, whose "Brown Eyed Girl" is a Bush favorite, and by John Fogerty, most predictably "Centerfield," which was played at Texas Rangers games when Bush was an owner.

The president also has an eclectic mix of songs downloaded into his iPod from Mark McKinnon, a biking buddy and his chief media strategist during the 2004 campaign. Among them are "Circle Back" by John Hiatt, "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" by Joni Mitchell and "My Sharona," the 1979 song by the Knack that Joe Levy, a deputy managing editor at Rolling Stone in charge of music coverage, cheerfully branded "suggestive if not outright filthy."
I have to say "My Sharona" is a very catchy song and while much overplayed when it was popular, still strikes me as a fun song to listen to once in a while.

And as you can tell from my playlist that I haven't done this.

I normally listen to that album all-at-once and my between-track transition is set to zero, so it's not as noticeable, though still there. But last night "Polythene Pam" came up on the Party Shuffle and cut off abruptly at the transition to the next song on the album.

Most albums are configured to be a collection of separate songs so it's not that much of a problem. Abbey Road definitely stands out in the crowd, in that respect.

I often wonder what they were thinking when they did that! A CD can play the tracks unbroken, though they are separate tracks. Why can't an iPod?
