Seen a strange or unusual road sign in our Aloha State? Post it here!

I still think it's strange to have interstates on an island

I find the Nene crossing signs weird...I've never seen a Nene crossing

Maybe I should know this already, but why does Zippy's Kapolei have a BLUE stop sign?

Picture below from my own archieve, taken in 2006.

I wondered the same thing about the STOP signs at CompUSA on Ala Moana Blvd., which are also blue.

The initial answer would be that these signs are located on private property; so they can do what they want? Yet, they're located within the entrance and view to public roadways, so it seems out of the norm.

What's probably more controversial though at the Kaka'ako CompUSA are the parking policy signs. lol Who cares though, since they're closing soon.

I've seen the blue stop signs sporadically as well. I've seen them in Mililani, Waipahu and in town. I hve no idea why they are blue.

          Discussed here.
The state Traffic Code, specifically Section 291C-36 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, regarding "Display of unauthorized signs, signals, or markings," says it is illegal to "place, maintain, or display upon or in view of any highway" any unauthorized sign "which purports to be or is an imitation of or resembles an official traffic-control device ... or which attempts to direct the movement of traffic. ..."

It would appear that private property owners have to use non-red stop signs.

However, according to an official with the city Department of Transportation Services, there is nothing to prevent such signs from being red as long as they do not "interfere with an official traffic-control device." The city has decided they don't.

Mel, I think that is a case of "I hope they are looking(no pun intended) out for one another".

IIRC, on a street in Kailua, about a block east of Kalaheo High School there were/are DUCK CROSSING signs with an image of a duck.

There's also HORSE CROSSING signs at various locations in Waimanalo.

I've seen some 12 or 14 mph speed limit signs in some hotel parking lots

Whoah! I guess that's how hotels make room for more guests. By taking out the ones currently staying there.

Kalaniana'ole highway heading out east Oahu should be 45 MPH, not 35. Everyone drives 40-45 (some over that) anyway. Until they see a cop, then they slow down.
