Just received my absentee ballot and voted for: Lillian Lai Lam Hong for mayor. Yes, you can take that to the bank Lillian...I'm sure now that you can post your views and concerns on this thread...you can gain votes, maybe not enough to win but who knows!

Are you Dem. or Rep.? And if so is there a primary elcetion that you have to win or somthing?

I'm a bit clueless about politics, especially over on Oahu!

          Re: Honolulu Mayor's Race 2004 - Chapter 2

On the lease to fee issue, I have to side with the property owners, as Lillian noted several posts ago. Reason? The property owners bought the land in good faith, developed the land by erecting the building (at least where condos are concerned) with the intention of leasing it out long term. When the leasholders signed up, they knew what they were getting into. Sure, back in 1965 that lease was like $90 a year or whatever... but today with property values as they are the leaseholders either have to re-up at the current market value or buy at the current market value, only if the property owner wants to sell. Government should never ever have forced property owners to sell to their tennants. I know this was done long ago, but to me, because Democrats were in control, this kind of socialism has prevailed. Whatever happened to private property rights?

As far as the mayors race goes, at this late juncture I am still undecided. The only thing I am decided upon is to not vote for Bainum mainly because he is so blatantly for the expensive proposition of fixed rail that will only benefit 10% of the population. Fixed rail and other forms of forced mass transit is only social engineering, the kind of stuff Democrats love.

If any of the mayoral candidates can step to the plate, and say "I am not for rail transit and it will never be built during my term in office," then that person has my vote.

The taxpayers cannot afford expensive rail. Our wallets are still aching from 40+ years of Democrat tax policy that will take several more years to correct, only if we get the right, fiscal conservatives into office.

I am for bus system. I believe all I have to do is keep the present city policy on adding more buses. Big ones, medium ones, & little ones. one regular bus will take away around 75 single driver of one single car on the road. I know it is not "as simple as that." there are other details I have to work on, If I am your Honolulu Mayor.
As you stated, even if I said I am not for rail transit, and I will not build one in my term of office, I don't think you are convinced to vote for me.
I believe rail transit, from city government & state government, it is a pay back scheme for favors, illegal campaign donations, etc. The non-bid or bid contract's have been jacked up by 5 folds or 10 folds. I don't have proof, just common business sense.
The rail transit, besides you have to buy the buses, with some modifications and some fancy names, it is building fancy trasit stations. It costs millions & millions. Then comes the developers eyeing the surrounding areas of the transit stations. They are going to build high rise condos and will make a lot of money! A pay back scheme from the city, to me.
I sensed that there is/are something in your mind for selecting a mayor,
what is it? Is it something you hope this coming mayor will do for your district?
I am for bus system. I ride TheBus. Yes, TheBus can always use some improvemnts. What do you think?

I laughed so loud. I am so happy. I got 3 votes by now. One from you. One from Brother Mel, a client that uses Oahu Speaks. One from me!
I am a very positive person. I do as much as I can do. I do as long as I am happy. I am still working on some more programs to put on Olelo. Now it is on Olelo channel 52 53 54 55 56. One day I have 3 programs at the same time on 3 different Olelo channels. I have done all I can do. The rest is at the mercy of the people in this city & County of Honolulu. I will be starting to walk the street and wave sign again from Sept. 6, on. I am going to the City Coucil to hear the current issues on 9-7, 9-8, 9-9. I have a Douglas Trade Show on 9-10, 9-11, 9-12, in NBC. I am very busy.
I just volunteered to-day for the Okinawa Festival, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fasi was on the stage. Mufi was dancing with the crowd. I didn't see Dr. Bainum. I was the video camera person.
Afterwards I hurried back to Olelo and put in some editing works. I go to-morrow again to volunteer for Okinawa Festival, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then I'll go to Olelo for editing till 10 p.m.
              Thank you again, very much.
              Love, Lillian Hong

Isn't it some co-incidence! I use only green pen to write. I do have to use black ink for official documents, such as the absentee ballot!
I am an independent. I have no party affliate.
Mayoral election is a non-partisan. Every registered voter in the island --Oahu, we called it the City & County of Honolulu, can vote.
If one of the 10 mayoral candidate receive 50% + 1 vote, he or she (I am the only she) will be elected out right to be Honolulu Mayor. Otherwise, the 2 top candidates will be facing each other to the November's General Election.

                  Re: Honolulu Mayor's Race 2004 - Chapter 2

I was volunteering as a video camera technician at the Okinawa Festival. I need to go to the bathroom. The ladies' waiting line is around 15 -20 persons. Both the real restroom and the portable temp. restroom's waiting line about same.
The men's waiting line is 0. There were only few using the facility.
A gentleman decided he is going to help all these poor ladies. He told the men to go to the portables. He directed the women to go to the men's.
We all listened to him and split the long line into 2. One goes to the women's, the other goes to the men's. Inside the man's, one urinal, one handicap, and one regular. We used the handicap one and the regular one. We just looked at the urinal.
If I am your Honolulu Mayor, I want to "delete" all urinals in the city's facilities. During jammed time, with a special duty police officer, or a park employee, offer the men's restroom to women. It is a choice. Up to you.
                  I need to know:
                  1. What do men think of this idea of mine?
                  2. Do women mind standing in line with a man infront of her, or at the back?

I don't know if the women would go for that Lillian but in a pinch I would try to use the men's side! Did you notice Lillian that in the mayor's race poll that you and Frank Fasi have 20%! See you're doing okay!

Someone mentioned party affiliation on here, and it occurred to me that I do not know which party that Mufi and Duke associate with. They like to keep this out of their advertisements. I admit I am curious, while it matters most to me what they say they will do for the island, more than anything.

The Honolulu mayor's race is nonpartisan, which officially means no party affiliations. That said, both Hanneman and Bainum are/were active members of the local Democratic party. I would imagine take lunch with Democrats more often than Republicans, anyway.

Recall the flap over the Brickwood Galuteria voiceover in an ad for Hanneman, which was recorded before Galuteria became the Democratic party chair. The Star-Bulletin article says it right out: "Both Bainum and Hannemann are Democrats, but the mayoral race is nonpartisan."

As an aside, with a Republican in the Governor's Office and with Republicans finally making a fair bit of noise in their own right, "Democratic control" is less indisputable. More and more often I've noticed campaign literature and ads -- even for partisan races -- leaving out the party affiliation entirely. Which, I suppose, is for the best... although for people for whom party links matter, it can be a bit aggravating.

                          Hi, Mocha,
Thanks you for your encouragement! Haha! Thank you to put me along side with the most famous Mayor Fasi. My goal result, up to to-day, is like a turtle, walking so slowly. I have done all my best happily since November, 2003. I only have, maybe, few more days, I can put programs on Olelo to tell people in the community that I, Lillian Hong is also running for Honolulu Mayor. So far I know, for sure, I got 4 real votes: You, me, Brother Mel, and Terry. I need a lot more, and more, to be #2. If not, I'll be done by September 18, 2004! Thank you for telling your friends and families about me. I can still dream,ya? This is a free country! Ha!
                          Love, Lillian Hong

I went thru the mayoral debate on Olelo on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Time went thru so fast, Mr. Bob Rees did not have time to ask a single Q to Mr. Teruya. There were 8 of us. Mayor Fasi, and Mr. Gibson were not present. I was very nervous at first, then OK, later. I got up this morning (September 9, 2004 ) at 6, so I can have a cup of coffee and watched the re-run from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. This was the first time, and I think the only time, all 10 mayoral candidates were invited to attend. I did OK. Olelo's crew had audio problems, time clock problems, camera switching problems.
To-day, I went to set up for our Douglas Trade Show in NBC for the week end show.
I picked up some Chinese food and rushed home just made it in time for Joe Moore at 7 p.m. I watched every minutes of it. It is very different from Olelo's the night before. Everything about the video production was fine. They are professionals! What do you think about Mayor Fasi?
Is he a character or not? He is still in demand, even Joe Moore had to yield to him! To me, Mayor Fasi does not look like 84, he surely does not act like 84, either. I do believe he will pick up some more votes from this program.
                              What do you think?
                              Love, Lillian Hong

                                Mufi gets my vote;
he can think on his feet. he's well spoken. We need a real kama'aina in office.
Bainum seems too ill at ease.

                                fasi; been there done that.
saw the three in action one speakoff; Fasi had to read a list of his 'accomplishments" rather than recount them from his own mind.

Major point against Fasi for my money:
he had the Queen's Surf torn down. This was a major beautiful draw on Waikiki beach. To do anything to destroy the old style thatched tiki laden tropical bars and restaurants is criminal.
                                Why was this done?
                                Apparently cuz he hated Spence.
This is no reason of course, to condemn, eminent domain and turn a property into a park.
personal spite destroys a beautiful landmark, something that hundreds if not thousands back then came to Hawaii for as well as many of us locals enjoyed visiting...
