  • Friday Conversation: When is a secret a secret?

This week's Friday Conversation is inspired by the WikiLeaks publication of sensitive Government documents. When is a secret a secret? Matapule and uaifi have discussed the WikiLeaks issue at length. There is no easy answer. Some of the leaks have been nothing more than embarrassing gossip. Other leaks have given an insight into the workings of our government and other governments. While still other leaks show the egregious transgressions of some real scoundrels!

I'll be the first to say my poll question is ambiguous by design. Thoughtful discussion is the goal. Please, let's leave cancer out of this thread (wink, wink)

Oh,.......... matapule and uaifi think that WikiLeaks deserves a medal for providing a public service. Yes, the leaks have lots of warts in them, but the meat of the leaks is what is important, regardless of what world leader (including Obama) look something less than Presidential. The arrest warrant for one of the US' prominent politicians is the result of these leaks. 'Bout time!

I think those that are harassing Assange should be investigated and the trail sniffed to it's origins. It's obvious 'some' want him dead for his world service. Too bad this wasn't happening from the start of W's first term. 'State secrets' has it legitimacies but it's long been a rouse used to scam us stupid. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSLDE6B21O820101204

Government "of, by and for the people" - ?
      When did they repeal that?
Oh yes, the First Amendment, as well.

I've always liked the idea of transparent government, but I also realize we cannot put everything out for view while under constant attack from terrorists.

      It's like:
What should be kept secret, and who should decide?
And if you don't want someone to hear something, don't say it.

On the other hand, I think we should have a reasonable expectation of the privacy of private communication.

Our government is already mistrusted by many of our own citizens because of things that are held from us, or believed to be held, or repressed.

This is your government - This is your government on drugs .

Makes you wonder what else is being held back from us.

What I find interesting is the fact that the news stations would mention that WikiLeaks had posted state secrets when it is about the US,and that was it. If you wanted to know what was posted, you had to look it up. But, when WikiLeaks posted secrets about the United Kingdom, they were very quick to report everything that was written.

The wheels of 'justice' have been spinning fast with trumped up charges and cowed countries having led to Assange volunteering himself into custody, now being held incommunicado with no bail allowed.
