So let’s ask the question the left never asks: how is it possible for an insurance company to pay for these giant medical bills? What makes it possible is a whole set of statistical calculations. For every person who needs open-heart surgery or chemotherapy, there have to be a certain number of other people who are paying their premiums but haven’t gotten seriously ill. If the insurance company has gotten its calculations right, the expenses for any one person’s catastrophic care are balanced out by the premiums other people pay “just in case.”
You can see how Obama’s demands undermine this whole system. To ask insurance companies to cover a patient after the tumor is diagnosed is to ask them to take on a known expense. Combine that with another Obama demand: that insurance companies can’t charge higher rates for those who are at higher risk of getting sick. So if insurance companies have to take on a known expense and can’t charge a higher rate for it, how are they going to pay for it? By raising everyone else’s rates, redistributing their wealth to the new freeloaders.
This isn’t insurance, it’s welfare. And that’s the whole point.

Bob I'm a Republican much like you. I used to be a staunch Democrat. My boss was Rick Hamada while living next door sharing the same driveway with one of Honolulu's staunchest Democrats former State Senator Tony Chang.

He (Tony) told me something that made me perk up one day. During the day both the Democrats and Republicans are at each other's throats, but by the end of the day, they're still friends and pat each other on the backs acknowledging the bait they put out for the mainstream media to choke on.

Is it all an act? Who knows but in the end it didn't matter as we all played poker together and got ripped drunk in the process.

But one thing I don't dare do and that is to jump into an ocean full of sharks. This pool we call Hawaii Threads is predominantly liberal. As proof in you being flamed left and right because of some of the statements you tell us here.

I do however throw out some bias in your favor as a fellow Republican and for that you do have my respect.

Making Government bigger is not what Republicans want. Entitlements make that happen. Our nation wasn't founded on the principals of a welfare state, it was founded on the essence that anyone who came to our shores can become the best they can be.

You cannot become a power by depending on hand outs. But you can hold the power over the people when you control what you give out. And like we've all heard on this forum: Power corrupts!

By taking away more and more of our free-enterprise system to government control, we are losing power to the government we install. Good or bad, the free-enterprise system is what this country is made of, and it's becoming less and less apparent as we adopt more government control over our lives.

Is it a march to Socialism? Well that's a bold statement and one that's sure to bring up the ire of Democrats who feel otherwise. No one in this freedom-loving country of ours wants to be labeled a Socialist much less a Communist (unless you detest baseball and football )

But the fact remains, we are losing more of our freedoms to government control from bans on smoking to mandating that we purchase health insurance. We definately are marching to Obama's tune. Whether it's a death march or a march to freedom can only be told once we get there.

I say let it play out. If the Democrats are correct well good for everyone. If the Republicans are correct, well good for us right? But I will not jump into an ocean of sharks waiting to devour our right-wing skins because of what we believe in. I will however throw you a lifeline and try to pull you in so you may argue another topic another day.

I am a Republican and proud to be one.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

No. No, you're not. You, Craig, are willing to listen, discuss and debate points in a reasonable fashion. You are also capable of thinking for yourself, rather than spouting the same old hate-speech that earns high ratings. You are the kind of Republican who can still earn respect - because you can GIVE respect. Sadly, you are part of a dying breed.

Oh - and did you know that I used to be a registered Republican voter? I changed my affiliation to "Independent" when Ronald Reagan was elected, because I did not want to be associated with his divisive policies, the ones I view as responsible for so much of the trouble this nation now suffers.

Later, I changed to "Democratic," because where I was living at the time, "Independent" voters were not permitted to participate in the primary process. I did it for participatory reasons, more than partisan ones.

Craig, whether I am a Democrat or Republican makes no difference in whether I can listen to both sides of an issue. What I cannot tolerate is the people who refuse to see any view but their own. Who won't admit they might not always be right. Who are intolerant of others opinions if they differ with them. If the current adminstration starts with the atitude of "my way or the highway" - then they will lose my support. Which has already happened. I know many who are conservatives - and they come in both Dem & Repub disguises. Just as do Liberals. and Moderates. Its just when folks from either side are totally inflexible (like the Birthers) that I get very impatient. I tend to talk back, and ask a LOT of questions. Some don't like that. and I just plain don't give a s**t. If I make others uncomfortable - they need to get over themselves and get off their egos and present me with an argument that I can believe in. and they need to speak in their OWN words, not keep quoting others.

Ok - now I'll go back to my very neutral corner.

                Well said!
Yet, what is wrong with welfare?
The welfare of the population is a worthy concern, yet the problem is those who take unfair advantage: always taking, never giving.

Yet how do we measure our contribution?
                In dollars? (Capitalism)
                In social contributions? (Socialism)
                In government service? (Imperialism)
                In the general good? (Communism)
In what we put into the system? (Hmmmmm, fascisim?)
Out of the goodness of our hearts? (Love)
Cause God says so? (Oppressive religion)

How do we take care of ourselves, and each other, and why?

                And, why not?

If we abandon those who have no means we have no heart.
If we do not practice love, we are not Christians.
If we abandon those in need, what can we expect when it's our turn?

Perhaps the problem is not universal healthcare:

My Vietnam Veteran friend, living in Luxembourg because he distains the USA, recently had a triple bypass at the cost of the government. Free.
Luxembourg wages no wars, so they have little to no national debt.
They can take care of their own citizens because they are not trying to run the world.

                What a surprise!

Remember when Obama said he wanted a "national security force"? Not the national guard, but a civilian one that has not sworn to uphold the Constitution? On July 2, 2008 in a speech in Colorado Springs, Barack Obama called for a national security force.

Obama just got his private army…

…And no one seems to have noticed. It is buried in the Senate revisions to the health care bill.

Subtitle C–Increasing the Supply of the Health Care Workforce
Sec. 5201. Federally supported student loan funds.
Sec. 5202. Nursing student loan program.
Sec. 5203. Health care workforce loan repayment programs.
Sec. 5204. Public health workforce recruitment and retention programs.
Sec. 5205. Allied health workforce recruitment and retention programs.
Sec. 5206. Grants for State and local programs.
Sec. 5207. Funding for National Health Service Corps.
                                Sec. 5208. Nurse-managed health clinics.
Sec. 5209. Elimination of cap on commissioned corps.
Sec. 5210. Establishing a Ready Reserve Corps.
Subtitle D–Enhancing Health Care Workforce Education and Training

You may be wondering why a private army might be needed, and what this HEALTHCARE bill dictates this private army will do. Here you go:

SEC. 5210. ESTABLISHING A READY RESERVE CORPS.
Section 203 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 204) is amended to read as follows:
                                ...
                                (c) PURPOSE AND USE OF READY RESERVE.–
                                (1) PURPOSE.–The purpose of the Ready Reserve Corps is to fulfill the need to have additional Commissioned Corps personnel available on short notice (similar to the uniformed service's reserve program) to assist regular Commissioned Corps personnel to meet both routine public health and emergency response missions.
                                (2) USES.–The Ready Reserve Corps shall–
                                (A) participate in routine training to meet the general and specific needs of the Commissioned Corps;
                                (B) be available and ready for involuntary calls to active duty during national emergencies and public health crises, similar to the uniformed service reserve personnel;
                                (C) be available for backfilling critical positions left vacant during deployment of active duty Commissioned Corps members, as well as for deployment to respond to public health emergencies, both foreign and domestic; and
                                (D) be available for service assignment in isolated, hardship, and medically underserved communities (as defined in section 399SS) to improve access to health services.
                                (d) FUNDING.—For the purpose of carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the Commissioned Corps under this section, there are authorized to be appropriated such sums as may be necessary to the Office of the Surgeon General for each of fiscal years 2010 through 2014. Funds appropriated under this subsection shall be used for recruitment and training of Commissioned Corps Officers.

So...does it get any more vague than this? Basically, it appears that the President can call up his private army and direct them to do whatever he wants as long as he can claim it's in the best interests of public health.

I guess Nancy Pelosi wasn't kidding when she said that we'd have to pass the bill before finding out what was in it. Of course, this begs the question of what other secret goodies have now been enshrined into law by a bunch of Congressional lemmings following their Pied Piper?
the bigger the government the smaller the citizen.
