  • Aloha from Phoenix, Arizona

    Aloha,

My wife and I are completely in love with Hawaii. We spent our honeymoon there in 1997 - both in Oahu and Maui. Then in 2000 we returned -- flew direct to Maui, and then in 2004 we stayed in both Oahu and Maui. We are returning for a 14 day trip in December 2006/January 2007 -- we can hardly wait!

We decided in Janaury to make a website/travelogue of our Maui travels and share our enthusiasm and experiences. Our website http://www.barefoot-in-maui.com/ is still a work in progress -- currently we have about 65 pages but will be adding several more over the next several months.

If you have a few minutes, please feel free to look at our site and let us know what you think.

    Mahalo!

Hey Scott, looks like you've got a great start. As for that overhead map of Maui, I believe you "borrowed" that from the "Mau'i Revealed" cover? If so, I think you need to cite where you got the pic from.

Also, if you subscribe to the "when in Rome do as the Romans do" notion when it comes to eating anywhere in Hawai'i, I think next trip you need to go a little farther afield than Cheeseburger in Paradise and Hard Rock. There are some little mom and pop take out places right around the corner in the same mall as the Hard Rock in Lahaina (there's a great local plate lunch place on the side by the ABC Store...can't remember the name). You can get relatively inexpensive "local" type food there to take to the beach and eat. Also explore some of the food places in Wailuku town (there's a neat Vietnamese restaurant called the Saigon Cafe that was featured on Rachel Ray's $40 a Day).

Also, "7 Sacred Pools" is a misnomer; there are more than 7 pools and none of them is sacred. The correct name is Ohe'a Gulch.

Great start, though, and congrats on the site.

      Hi Muilang,

Thanks for taking a look at the site and for the congrats.

I believe you are referring to the map found on my Maui History page:
      http://www.barefoot-in-maui.com/maui-history.html
Actually, I've given credit for the source of this particular page (including the graphics), which is Wikipedia.com (the free encyclopedia), and you can find that info at the bottom of that page. Wikipedia is a Creative Commons website, and rules for its use are found here:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiped...tation_License

If you are referring to my Maui Maps page (http://www.barefoot-in-maui.com/map-of-maui.html) I got the first two maps from Google (as stated on the page).

And the last one on this page -- the Maui roadmap -- I got from http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/natio...island_map.pdf
This map was created by the National Park Services. Use of this map is found here:

      http://www.lib.utexas.edu/usage_statement.html?maps=yes

      Quoting in part:
"Most of the maps scanned by the University of Texas Libraries and served from this web site are in the public domain. No permissions are needed to copy them."

Thanks for pointing that out about the Seven Sacred Pools. Previously I've made mention of its real name -- Ohe'a Gulch -- on my Beaches page and my Video Gallery page, but I forgot to do that on my Road to Hana page. So I'm going to make that change for clarity.

As for the food, my boys are much more picky than I am, so I tend to eat where they want. We did eat Kimo's and the Rusty Harpoon (does that count? ). And I'm much more of an "international eater" than my wife, so in December perhaps I can do a "one-off" and eat a few meals some of the local restaurants such as the ones you recommended.

      Thanks again for your input!

      Scott
