  • Re: What are you currently reading?

I found a copy of "Remembering America" recently, penned by Richard N. Goodwin.

The subtitle is "A Voice from the sixties"
The author was one of the few key inner circle Kennedy advisors
that were transitioned into the Lyndon Baines Johnson administration.

    His thoughts are worth reading.
After Kennedy left office, many things changed within the Heart and Soul of America..

Kennedy didn't "leave office" - he was assassinated. There is a big difference!

I recently finished Frances Kakugawa's Kapoho, a bunch of short pieces about the little village she grew up in on the Big Island, before the lava swallowed it up. Nice pieces of history and reflection on humanity! I really enjoy her friendly but spare style.

Kapoho was a unique event in that a major vent erupted right next to the sea.

The National Geographic pictures from that time show vast lava fountains and
              huge amounts of steam.

The remaining cone has a little lake within.

I photographed some cultural heritage sites in that region and left the area
              with some instilled meaning.

Another interesting book emerged from a local second hand bookshop.
                "Roosevelt's Secret War'
FDR and World War two espionage."
The early connections between industrial bankers and the rise of the nazi state are well
                documented.
The author is Joseph Persico ,who has a marvelous insight into these
                matters.

Another cool book surfaced at goodwill.
                  "The Master Spy"
                  The story of Kim Philby.
Phillip Knightley ,the author, was the last journalist to speak with Philby before his demise.

An interesting video leading into this world is "Tinker Tailor ,Soldier Spy".
The original BBC series is much preferable to the later film.

Currently reading Coin Locker Babies by Ryu Murakami (no relation to Haruki), translated from the Japanese by Stephen Snyder. This is a re-read for me. Murakami is somewhat of the “bad boy” of Japanese literature. He’s not for everyone, but he is provocative. (Maybe that’s why he’s not for everyone.)

                      THHGTTG "trilogy" is my favorite!

I'm currently reading "Deadwood" by Pete Dexter, and although I like it, its taking me awhile to get into it. I just finished "The Help" on Wednesday, which was so good I practically ate it up in just one day!

                              A very educational read.
One of the most productive upgrades to public health in the USA was the installation
of an underground sewer system in New York ,NY.

                                Next up:

"Leningrad" by Anna Reid, the first major book about this WWII blockade since Harrison Salisbury's "The 900 Days" came out in 1969. Reid uses Russian archive materials that were unavailable before the years of glasnost.
