  • Recommend a Hawaiian name for a boy

    Starting with a K.

Yes, I looked at a list, and I don't want Kimo. Nothing wrong with that name, just that I know too many already.

    Thanks,

shouldn't you be asking the grandparents or other family to help you pick a name? of course, thats assuming that family members are available. that would be better than a bunch of strangers from the internet that don't know you or the child.

Keola, Keoki, Keli`i, Keali`i spring to mind immediately.
(And you won't find many folks "stranger" than me...with a nod of approval to what anapuni808 said.)

Good grief, there is nothing wrong with posting a general question to an online forum asking for name suggestions.
Google for "Hawaiian names", "Hawaii name boy", etc. Here is one site that has some names and meanings:

Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

I like Amati's suggestion, but it's kind of an old-style custom to be very careful assigning Hawaiian Names. If you know some Hawaiian people ask around - usually they have an Auntie or know of a kahuna who is knowledgeable regarding the assignment of names. If they are friends or neighbors, just ask them if there's someone special they go to when choosing their children's names.

Yes, getting "first hand advice" is nice if it is available.

Also good advice is, especially for mainlanders who live in areas where Spanish or another foreign language is often spoken, to make sure that the Hawaiian name you have chosen is not a name or word that is similar to the other language and perhaps has a different meaning. For example, I won't mention the actual word, but my neighbor's Hawaiian "nick-name" is also a Spanish word. In Spanish it is the name of a woman's body part. My neighbor does fine with the name here in Hawaii, but if she ever moved to California, she'd be embarrassed.

So, when living outside of Hawaii, double-check that the Hawaiian word will be acceptable when used in your area to prevent unnecessary embarrassment. IMHO.

as you will have noticed from other postings, I wasn't being impolite. I was suggesting that it is customary to consult with family members or others who are close when giving a Hawaiian name.

I think you had a negative reaction to any posting from me, rather than to what was said. You might want to reconsider your reactions in future - I'm really a pretty nice person

Here's an added endorsement for "Ask An Auntie," esp. if Hawaiian. We kind of compromised - our choice for first names, family-related (and lengthy!) Hawaiian names as middle names.

Actually, the reaction was to what was said (or rather how). As for having a negative reation to any posting from you, your assumption was incorrect, I attempt to be stay focused on what is being said and not so much who is saying it, unless some pattern develops that makes certain people stand out - be it good or bad.

                      Peace, world.
It is a beautiful sunny day outside.
                      The weekend should be nice.
The kids get 4 days off (due to furlough and the holiday).
I don't have to get up extra early for 4 days.
                      Life is good.
Ah, sigh, now I am all warm and fuzzy feeling about HT again.

Likely you won't hear of 'kahuna' as a name - it's a title - a kahuna is a kind of 'expert' or 'specialist' in some form of Hawaiian lore.

The common conception is that a kahuna is a Hawaiian 'priest' or 'magician,' but the word following kahuna describes their specialty.

For instance a kahuna lomilomi is a specialist in healing massage. A kahuna pule would be a specialist in praying. A kahuna la'au lapa'au, a specialist in herbal medicine. And so on.

It's more and more common for non-Hawaiian children to have Hawaiian middle names - kind of out of respect for the culture and land they were born into.

This is somewhat similar to Europeans, Africans and Asians taking Western names when moving to America.
