Immigration and Customs will allow us to come in some time after 8 AM. Arrival procedures are being coordinated now."

This is sooo cool... another ocean sailor canoe to add to the ranks!
And it will accompany Hokule'a on the round the world trip!

Hikianalia is in Hilo!

"A looong gentle night of downwind sailing as we anxiously approached Big Island. First urban glow, then Kumukahi light, then the dark gloom of the island itself – we’re home! Many thanks to all who made this incredible voyage possible.

Voyage Summary:
Auckland, New Zealand, to Papeete, Tahiti: Oct. 9-Oct.25, 16 days, 2218 nautical miles.
Papeete, Tahiti (French Polynesia) to Hawai‘i, Nov. 1-Nov. 18, 17 days, 2249 nautical miles.

Hikianalia is expected to sail directly from Hawai‘i Island to O‘ahu next weekend."

Don and I got to go on-board Hikianalia with Captain/Navigator Kaiulani Murphy today and check it out! Saw Hokule'a dry-docked too! Many changes in propulsion design from the 7 others built like it. Hikianalia has inboard electric motors with shafts to propellers. The others have electric out-drives that can be lowered or raised as needed. Hokule'a has been widened by 2 feet and beautifully lashed back together.

Yeah that lashing work is absolutely beautiful!
We just lucked out showing up at an opportune time and I saw Kaiulani.
I yelled to her over the fence and she invited us in... score!

Good score indeed!
I got a real close look at Hokulea hauled out about a dozen years ago. It was in their large work shed at the end of the road where the La Mariana Sailing Club and restaurant are located. Is that where you saw it too?

I should've recognized that from a couple of your photos. I've been there before a few times, going through their other research ships. Great place. Next time I'm over there I'll have to swing by the old Hokulea site near La Mariana and see if they've given it up.

Also, here is a video of the new world speed record under sail... over 65 knots!
When I raced on the ultralight 70-footers our top speed was around 28 knots, so this new record is astounding.

Vestas Sailrocket 2 is incredibly fast. Just wow!!!

And it already broke its own record of 65 knots, getting up to 68 knots just a few days ago!
