  • Any SciFi fandom here?

I was wondering why there aren't more scifi conventions here in Honolulu. It seems like the perfect place for one. I know there's an anime convention in April, but are there any others? I would think that scifi fans and guests would love any excuse to come here. Is it too expensive or what?

I just moved here. I haven't been active in fandom for a long time but used to be active in San Diego scifi and comic book fandom. I still have a lot of friends there involved in Comic-Con etc.

So anyway, let me know if there are any other upcoming scifi conventions here or if you know why there aren't.

Is the anime convention just for anime or does it have things to do that a non-anime fan would enjoy? I used to love to dress up in costume and go to panels and movies, and the dealer's room. I love seeing TV and movie actor guests, and scifi authors as well.

    Thanks!

Lots of sci fi fans here, but it's been a long time since we've had regular conventions of the Star Trek/Creation variety (which I attended often as a teen). The largest comparable annual event is KawaiiKon, and there have been others held in fits and starts (HEXXP/Oni-Con).

There's a very ambitious plan to do a general sci-fi convention on the Big Island next year: HawaiiCon, launched on Kickstarter.

But San Diego is a flight away. My wife and I love going to Comic-Con... as crowded and as tough as it is to get passes though it might be.

I attended a few Creation Conventions in the past which would include a guest speaker from one of the Star Trek TV series, showing of clips of upcoming sci-fi themed movies, maybe gossip of those movies, and dealers selling their stuff.

Well there are no Star Trek series currently in production, one can get clips from the Apple movie trailers site, as well as web sites that deal with movie gossip and selling of stuff.

Yes. I am a major reader, mostly short stories & collections annually by folk like Gardiner Dozois. I read everything in print, and am now scouring the internet for more. Baen books has been at good, inexpensive source of new works.

Nice to meet you all. While I would have loved to have attended at least one Creation con, I was more referring to the good old fashioned fan-run type of conventions (all the big ones like Comic-Con, Worldcon, Dragoncon etc. started out that way) which are usually about all scifi, fantasy and horror, not just Star Trek, and not just TV and movies, but also books. Someone told me they had a Worldcon here years ago.

Are there any good scifi fandom groups here on Oahu? Anyone interested in starting one with me?

It's nice if you can afford to fly to San Diego or other islands... I don't think most people can.

FYI My brothers and mom helped start the San Diego Comic-con (they were on the original committee in 1970). I have a small fan page for it at http://tvmegasite.net/prime/comiccon.shtml Almost everyone I know in San Diego either works on or goes to Comic-Con now, but we haven't lived in San Diego since 1982 so I haven't been for a long time. It's very different now...

I know The Last Outpost was originally a Star Trek fan club, but is open to all sci-fi:

And I'd definitely get in touch with the organizers of Kawaii Kon, Oni-Con, and HawaiiCon:

            https://www.facebook.com/OniconHawaii

Want to start one? Looks like Hawaii needs representation in the Sci-Fi/Fantasty category of Meetup.com:
