Re: Neil's 90 day homeless plan

It's semi-widely known, I could introduce you to a few who do it. Pretty nice work if you can get it, and Hawaii is the easiest state to accomplish it.

Really? It is also semi-widely known that the world is going to end today, but that doesn't make it true.

You know some oil company and banking execs?!

Re: Neil's 90 day homeless plan

Yeah, perhaps I wasn't clear, but my friend is really messed up. His homelessness is not really what I find heartbreaking; it's how I can sit and talk with him and never feel like I'm reaching him. It's seeing him constantly anxious and frightened. He's sort of the same guy, but he's also very much not. I wish I could describe it better. I only have mutual friends' description of what he was like on his meds, so who knows how well they worked for him--obviously, not well enough for him to want to keep on them. I am sure part of why he is where he is comes from his decisions, but I'm just as sure he's not 100% capable of making decisions anymore.

Anyway, not to derail the subject of current efforts' merit...just wanted to interject something about what makes these things feel personal to me.

That's one of the good things about this forum, Pohaku, personal sides usually get respect and appreciation.
I had a friend from school days that somehow went mentally askew in his 20s, he was only half the cool guy we once knew and could only remain his friends, and hope for the best.

Yes, absolutely! I'm looking for a bank exec who will loan me about $10M at 4% interest (TARP funds) right now.

(I'm listening to "When my wahine does the poi" on the IPOD, Wait now it mo bettah, is "Koe hikule'o oe' paini tu'u". Good stuff!)

Re: Neil's 90 day homeless plan

And let's remember yet other parts of this BS, there are only 2 semi-large shelters on Oahu that these jerks are trying to starve/force 6000+ people into, which are nearly filled to capacity, THEY CHARGE $ to stay there.
Plus, Next Step, one of the 2, is always on the verge of having to move, which they eventually will. Is there another huge vacant warehouse in Honolulu with gaping holes in the roof and bedbug infestation to hoard folks into?

How does this Nazi-esque plan even begin to work? Ovens?

No, you were fairly clear. Your friend is living in a manner you find less than satisfactory and you are disheartened by your own incapacity to 'reach' the person you believe he once was. Fully your problem, not his.

The putative resolvers of homelessness (which is an ever-evolving diagnosis, not a disease) are among the mentally ill (which is an ever-evolving diagnosis, not a disease), their perceptions are skewed so as to render the simple and effective solutions readily apparent to reasonably sane persons invisible.
May I always be found beneath your contempt.

Getting into arguments and fighting about who the homeless are isn't helping any. Each story is different, although some of the results may seem similar.

My best advice to any functional human being is to go out there and do some volunteer work before generalizing.

Re: Neil's 90 day homeless plan

PS I'm 99% certain that one of my children is suffering from schizphrenia and may well be one of the homeless, sooner or later.

I'm doing everything I can do to try and get the situation somewhat stable and to prepare for the future...but I'm not going to live forever and I have no control over an adult person, family member or other. I'm not sure what the solution for this is, if there even is one, but the whole issue with my son has led me to be much more tolerant of homeless people and tolerance.

Not that homelessness is just a mental health issue, or visa versa.

Sounds like you made up your mind about my friend and me long before you ever heard anything about us.

Pohaku, you are new here, like I was once. This is Salmoned's little initiation rite. He does it to everyone who is a new poster, like he did to me in the beginning. Better to ignore him and move on.

Sorry to butt in....but we used to have a sweet little chestnut horse called Pohaku that boarded at our place...and just seeing the name on my screen makes me smile.

No, when my psychic abilities kick in I'm really obnoxious. I just read what you wrote and bounced it off my magic mirror.

Here's an excerpt from Dan Boylan's article in the current Midweek, 'Whatever Happened to Civility', quoting Jim Leach:

"To get a sense of reality, you have to see an event from different sets of eyes."

If Dan Boylan and Jim Leach can understand this, I think most of us here at HT can get it, too. [Not that I need to justify my comments, only my magic mirror often seems to be misapprehended or undervalued by others. ]
