      Re: Earthquake just now

They just flashed a CIVIL EMERGENCY on TV for most islands of Hawaii, effective from 6:38pm to 9:38pm. It didn't say for what reason. Anyone know?

          Re: Earthquake just now

OK, I just got off the phone with HPD at the Waikiki substation, and the officer told me it was in fact due to that earthquake on the Big Island you mentioned. But he said according to their civil defense bulletin that a tsunami was NOT generated, so it's all clear.

I wish they'd give the all clear on TV!

What's weird is the officer wasn't even aware of this CIVIL EMERGENCY ticker on TV, and actually had to put me on hold to find out what's the scoops. That alone is kinda' scary!

Sheesh, where are the authorities and media getting their information from!?

Now the Advertiser finally posted a bulletin, saying it was a 4.4 quake....

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook Big Island residents at 6:30 p.m. Monday. It was felt by island residents, but no tsunami was generated.

I'll stick with NOAA's statements over the news media. Or should I?

TATT, the earthquakes that occur in Hawaii aren't generated by slipping or clashing tectonic plates, but strictly by volcanic activity.

The Hawaiian Islands are SMACK in the middle of one giant Pacific plate, with an active volcano that's kinda' like a stubborn pimple that never goes away.

Right on, you are right. I always forget about the moving over the hot spot that has created the amazing island chain of HI.

At any rate, with the tectonic activity that seems to be going on all over the place, in such a short period of time, has to make one think(I am not a doomsdayer). A little nudge from one corner of the earth seems to be trickling, down/over, a bit... too much for me to get into to try and explain my thoughts...not that it even matters. I need to not beverage pre-posting.

So much hysteria over a measly 4.4 earthquake. In California, that's just a reminder to roll over in bed. Please go back to the Chilling Out and Hanging Loose that Hawaii is supposed to be known for.

That is the great thing about HT: if you are uninterested in a thread, you can just not read it. Meanwhile, I can understand why the interest in a quake in Hawaii, there is a history of damage such as from the 2006 6.7 quake. And only a week ago was a major evacuation due to a potential tsunami caused by an earthquake elsewhere.
                            Hysteria? Hardly.
                            Interest? Certainly.

And the great thing about threads is the author's opinion is allowed to be posted in response to it, even if no one else agrees with it. Nowhere did I say this was a thread that I wasn't interested in.

I missed the 2006 quake. The last 6+ I had was in 1994. We lost our house then... but that's okay, because without that event, we wouldn't be in the better one we have today.
