  • Nature: Kilauea: Mountain of Fire

Friend and colleague, Paul Atkins, was the cinematographer using an HD cam for this episode of Nature on PBS. That guy leads such an interesting, adrenalin driven life. And, he's one of the most laid back people I've ever met!!!

Paul's underwater asst. cameraman, Steve Miller, sent the following:
Here's some behind-the-scenes of our underwater HDCAM in action last March of '08. I worked as the underwater AC for DP Paul Atkins and with his safety diver -- renowned deep-sea rebreather diver, Richard Pyle -- and behind-the-scenes cameraman Mike May. The footage will be part of a PBS "Nature" show airing on March 29th 8pm. Check your local listings for your time.

Paul shot the underwater Lava flow back in the early '80s on 16mm with Mike deGruy and AC Keith Turner. For the past several years, Paul has been relentlessly trying to shoot it on HDCAM. A few years ago, conditions were looking good, but when we got there, it was blowing 20 knots (as usual) with large swells and zero visibility underwater and eerie explosions. Finally, after many attempts, this time it paid off. We got three days of perfect conditions. Check it out here:

Paul's account of the experience is under the video screen in the first link.

The show airs in Hawaii on KHET, Sun. March 29 at 7p. It repeats on 3/30 at 11p and 3/31 at 2a.

Wow! Thanks, TS; we are ready to watch it tonight, and it makes us want to go see the volcano for ourselves!

I used to have a beautiful 8 1/2 X 11 color photo of a snow covered volcanic lava flow. The contrast between the prominent white snow, some black rock, and steaming red lava fingers with the dusky sunset in the background, was stunning.

        Anybody got a shot similar?

mahalo tutu. Will be heading over to the DVR to set it up to record when it comes on later.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.
