Re: What song(s) has/have made you cry?

Beautiful Boy is not a sad song, in and of itself. But it is sad because of outside circumstances.

    Basically a song that John Lennon wrote for his then 5-year-old son, Sean, the bridge goes;

Out on the ocean sailing away,
    I can hardly wait,
To see you to come of age.

But of course, an assassin's bullet would deny John of that pleasure.

At the Post 9/11 Concert I choked up at Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down." He had that look on his face like he was puttin it right in the face of the terrorists on the behalf of all Americans. And Paul McCartney's, We will fight for the right to live in "Freedom" also sung at that event, was a choked up chicken skin moment for me.

"Daniel" by Elton John, in honor of my friend named Daniel, who passed away about 8 years ago.

okay, my own mele that was written in 1983, translated into hawaiian by larry kimura and written for keoni and odetta lindsey on the big island.

            aia i ka uka 'iu
            i walea iho ai
            me ka anu ho'oheno
            i ka poli o waimea

            kau mai ka hali'a
            i ia 'aina aloha
            me na hoa ho'okipa
            piha loko maika'i

            ku mai 'o maunakea
            me kona hanohano
            e ho'olu mai ana
me ka pa o ke kehau

            puana a'e no au
            i ku'u mele nei
            no keoni me odetta
            i ka poli o waimea

            there in the high country
            i had an enjoyable stay
            with the caressing coolness
at the very heart of waimea

            i feel so very warm
            for this beloved land
            with my hospitable hosts
            so full of generosity

            maunakea appears
            in all her majesty
            soothing oh so pleasantly
with the breeze of the kehau

            i dedicate now
            this my song
            to keoni and odetta
at the very heart of waimea

as a child, my family stayed with the lindsey's. the spirituality, serenity and peace i felt there was very overwhelming. i hadn't experienced those feelings again until the recent purchase of land up at mauna loa estates, volcano, big island.

Re: What song(s) has/have made you cry?

A lot of the songs that people mention make them cry have stories behind them. Here's mine...

              Phil Collins...Do You Remember.

It was the end of a 16 year relationship. We had a 5 year old son, and I was going through radiation treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer. My husband left me for someone else. To this day, everytime I hear this song, it brings tears to my eyes and takes me back to a very sad and scary time...

E Kanilehua, please record it for all of us! I'd love to hear you sing it! Need an accompaniment? I don't play 'ukulele or guitar but do play piano. If you find an 'ukulele player and/or a guitarist, we'd be all set! Let me know if I could kokua in any way.

                You in on this?

Re: What song(s) has/have made you cry?

Only one song has made me cry....

                  Return to Pooh Corner
Written and performed by: Kenny Loggins

Christopher Robin and I walked along
Under branches lit up by the moon
Posing our questions to Owl and Eeyore
As our days disappeared all too soon
But I've wandered much further today than I should
And I can't seem to find my way back to the Wood

So help me if you can
                  I've got to get back
To the House at Pooh Corner by one
                  You'd be surprised
There's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh

Winnie the Pooh doesn't know what to do
Got a honey jar stuck on his nose
He came to me asking help and advice
And from here no one knows where he goes
So I sent him to ask of the Owl if he's there
How to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear

It's hard to explain how a few precious things
Seem to follow throughout all our lives
After all's said and done I was watching my son
Sleeping there with my bear by his side
So I tucked him in, I kissed him and as I was going
I swear that the old bear whispered
                  "Boy welcome home"

                  Believe me if you can
                  I've finally come back
To the House at Pooh Corner by one
                  What do you know
There's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin
Back to the ways of Christopher Robin
Back to the days of Pooh

The last verse always gets me, like watching the last reel of ET.
I guess it's because I'm a father now and i've come full circle in life.

Eva Cassidy's version of "Fields of Gold" -- it's as if I've never heard it before.

It was written somewhere that Sting made it no secret that he hated it whenever someone covered that song. Upon hearing it, however, all that changed. Eva Cassidy career was just taking off when her life was cut short, but now the whole world knows about her and her music.
                    Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you

He sure does, but his cover isn't the same for me, unfortunately.
