My favorite 2 songs written by Rupert Holmes is "Timothy" and "Give Up Your Guns" recorded by the one hit album rock group, The Buoys in 1971. "Timothy" is supposedly a song about cannibalism which was discussed elsewhere on this board. I think "Give Up Your Guns" was the better song.
Interesting interview with Buoys member Jerry Hludzik here, which starts off talking about how the band got linked up with Holmes.

Prior to having his own successes under his name, Holmes was also a part of a band called "The Street People," who had a Top 40 hit in 1970 with "Jennifer Tompkins," and he replaced Ron Dante as lead vocalist of The Cuff Links (he was already the primary arranger for the group).

As for TutuSue's list --- it's almost as if she had been listening in when I was a jazz DJ in the late '70s/early '80s. Just need to add some Al Jarreau...
        Anything by Anita Baker, also.

You still got a lot of vinyl? I been looking forever for The Copper Nickel. Come Run With Me stands out in my mind. I found the album at Froggy's (?) once, but it had a hemangous gouge in it.

Copper Nickel's 2 hit tracks "Walk Close to Me" and "Come Run With Me" are available on CD. I think they appear on Tom Moffatt's "Best of Paradise" CD compilation and I think both are on Norm Winter's "Long Lost Oldies Volume 3". As soon as I get back to Oahu (tomorrow) I'll check my copy of the CD/MP3 list on my home computer's iTunes to confirm.

Thanks Ocean Pacific. Here are all of the tracks on Norm Winter's "Long Lost Oldies Volume 3" CD compilation. It covers songs from the mid 60s to early 1970s. The previous 2 volumes cover mostly 1950s and 60s doo wop songs. The CDs are only available at Jelly's.

Long Lost Oldies Volume 3 (songs you rarely hear on the radio today)

If That's the Way That You Want It - Diamond Head
Groovin' Out On Life - The Newbeats
Morning of Our Lives - The Arkade
I Will Always Think About You - New Colony Six

Life Is That Way - José Feliciano
What Do I Do On Sunday Morning - Diamond Head

One Day Of Your Life - Alex Keenan
Purple Rain Drops - Stevie Wonder

It's a great compilation if you like and remember these radio hits from more than 30 years ago.

Re: Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

Yeah, I liked Laura Brannigan. Too bad she passed away at too early of an age.

                  Besides, "Gloria" my faves included:

                  Spanish Eddie (1985)
                  Self Control (1984)

A lot of disco music doesn't get airplay today and we discussed those in this thread: http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=15336

I'd also like to add Mary Hopkin, who had a short chart run with a few singles released on The Beatles' Apple Records.

                  Those Were the Days (1968)
Goodbye (1969) - written by Paul McCartney
                  Temma Harbour (1970)
                  Que Sera Sera (1970)
                  Knock Knock Who's There? (1972)
The Puppy Song - album track

I also liked the Poppy Family which featured Terry & Susan Jacks

                  Where Evil Grows (1971)
Which Way You're Going Billy (1970)

Terry Jacks went on to record the #1 hit "Seasons in the Sun" (1974)

And more on the family theme:

You never hear most of the Partridge Family's hits on the radio.

Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted (1971)
Morning Rider on the Road (1971)
Breaking Up is Hard to Do (1972)
                  Friends & a Lover (1973)
It's One of Those Nights (1972)

This ABBA b-side was a hit in Hawaii (1977):

                  Happy Hawaii

I may have mentioned the following previously but now I have some video links. Look at them soon because these tend to be pulled off YouTube with no notice.

Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - Middle of the Road (1971) #1 on KMVI 550 radio

Put Your Hand in the Hand - Ocean (1971)

Devil You - The Stampeders (1971)

Son of My Father - Chicory (1972)

And something out of the ordinary: "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin issued on a 45 rpm disc. They crammed 8 minutes of music on this thing.

Another classic rocker you don't hear often... the SHORT version of The Doors' "Light My Fire".

                  Enjoy!

Didnt Mary Hopkin date Paul at one time? I have a clip of her performing somewhere. Did ABBA ever perform here? Laura Branigan was a great, underrated singer and great looking too. I remember her on an episode of CHIPS singing "Gloria" which I gather will be edited out if the DVD of the show is ever released.

Was reviewing some old Mike Douglas Shows of late and saw Keith perform "I'm Easy", always liked that song from the Nashville soundtrack. Just Keith and a guitar. Simple.

I dont hear the theme from tv show SWAT anymore, when I was a kid I remember that song on the AM radio blasting at times you could hear the song being played in several cars at once at a stoplight with the windows down.

Another forgotten Laura Branigan song is "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You", a hit 25 years ago that Michael Bolton wrote originally and later recorded with a hit of his own.

Those Were The Days in on 107.9's playlist. But you're right about her other recordings. You never hear any of her other stuff.

The same can be said for Shirley Jones' younger son, Shaun Cassidy.

                        Hey Deanie
                        Da Doo Ron Ron

                        Teen Dream

Well, at least those songs sorta get airplay on Partridge Family & Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries reruns.

Short version of Light My Fire is on 107.9's playist. So is the edited cut of Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride, as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival's Susie Q. Conversely, whenever KPOI plays these songs, they use the full-length versions.

This week, I've been excavating the 1960s and 1970s and found:

Buffalo Springfield: Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing

                              Love: Alone again or

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: From the beginning

                              Cream: I'm so glad

                              Linda Ronstadt: Adios

Dan Fogelberg: Give me some time

                              Carole King: Been to Canaan

                              Randy & the Rainbows: Denise

                              Ian and Sylvia: Lovin' Sound

I also liked the Poppy Family which featured Terry & Susan Jacks

                                Where Evil Grows (1971)
Which Way You're Going Billy (1970)

Terry Jacks went on to record the #1 hit "Seasons in the Sun" (1974)

Susan Jacks recorded the female version of David Gate's "NEVER LET HER GO," titled "NEVER LET HIM GO." It had a following here in Hawaii, but did not chart nationally.

I have an earlier version of "SEASONS IN THE SUN" recorded by Tommy Sands. He autographed it for me at an "oldies" show, the Valentine Hop, produced by "Uncle Tom Moffatt" and headlined by Teddy Randazzo in 1998.
