  • Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

Enjoyed the thread on disco hits that have vanished over the years, how about other songs from the 1970's and 1980's that are forgotten and don't hear on the radio much anymore.

    Burton Cummings, Stand Tall:

Eric Clapton, I Can't Stand It

    Rupert Holmes, Him

Cheap Trick, The Flame (#1 song when I was in high school)

Genesis, Taking it All too Hard

    Christopher Cross, All Right

Re: Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

I still hear "The Flame" on Love Songs with Delilah, it seems every time I happen to be in a restaurant that blasts that blasted radio program. Also, "I Can't Stand It" makes frequent appearances on 105.9 The Big Kahuna.

The others, though...geez. They're good songs, but yeah: Who plays them anymore?

I'll add Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City," Men Without Hats's "Safety Dance" (which I have a recording of, so it's cool), Sammy Hagar's "Your Love is Driving Me Crazy," Duran Duran's "Union of the Snake," anything by Missing Persons, Frankie and the Knockouts' "Sweetheart," Autograph's "Turn up the Radio," Fastway's "Say What You Will," and the one I really, really want to get my hands on in digital form: Chequered Past's "How Much is Too Much?"

Edit: Well what do you know? I'm sure I searched for "How Much is Too Much?" at eMusic.com (where I have a subscription) and came up with nothing, but the entire album is available there for download now. Woo hoo!

Edit again: It was added to eMusic.com on March 31, 2008, and I know I haven't searched for it since last year...

Re: Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

in the rare event that I hear these songs, I almost lose my mind in giddy excitement:

      Saga On the Loose
Devo Through With Being Cool and Working in a Coal Mine
Blue Oyster Cult Veteran of Psychic Wars Joan Crawford
      the Kinks Destroyer
      B-52s Rock Lobster Legal Tender
      Dead Kennedys Holiday in Cambodia

Come to think of it, how in the heck did my family let me listen to all of these jams without forcing my butt into therapy.

Re: Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

I make it a hobby to collect tons of old top 40 hits from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. I have plenty on MP3 as well as many of their original vinyl and CD counterparts. We have discussed old songs in several threads at HT. Among my favorites:

Hawaii Top 40 radio: 1950s to Early 80s
        http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthread.php?t=1942

And there I list a bunch of songs that used to get regular airplay on Hawaii radio and sometimes no where else (not counting straight on traditional Hawaiian music, but more so top 40 music /rock / pop/ soul)

From the post I made in 2004:

        - "Endless Summer" by The Sandals (1966)
        - "Sunlight" album track by Three Dog Night (1971)
        - "Pipeline Sequence" by Honk (1972)
        - "Summer Sun" by Jamestown Massacre (1972)
        - "If That's The Way That You Want It" by Diamond Head (1973)
        - "Give Up Your Guns" - The Buoys (1971)
        - "Grovin' Out On Life" - The New Beats (1970)
        - "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" - Middle of the Road (1971)
        - "Mandrill" - Mandrill (1971)
        - "Morning of Our Lives" - The Arkade (1971)
        - "I Found Someone of My Own" - Free Movement (1971)
        - "I Dig Everything About You" - The Mob (1971)
        - "Circle Game" - Rick Ely (1971)
        - "Cubano Chant" - El Chicano (1971)
        - "Precious & Few" - Climax (1971)
        - "Life And Breath" - Climax (1972)
        - "Child of December" - Climax (1972)
        - "Caroline This Time" - Climax (1972)
        - "Ebony Eyes" (1972 - b side single)
        - "You'll Never Get To Heaven" (1973)
        - "Star on a TV Show" (1975)
        - "Sunshine Keri" - Lee Oskar (1976)
        - "Smiling Islands" - Robbie Patton & Stevie Nicks (1983)
        - "Lahaina" - Loggins & Messina (1973)
        - "Tahiti Tahiti" - Voyage (1979)
        - "What Cha Doin'" - Seawind (1980)
        - "Keep it in the Family" - The Road Home (1971)

There were other 60s and 70s era songs added to that thread. From the 1980s I certainly count the following as "forgotten":

Precious to Me - Phil Seymour (1981)
Beach Rock - Blue Finn (1982)
Smoke Two Joints - The Toys (1982)
        I Think We're Alone Now - Shnazz (1980)

Re: Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

My daughter's first-ever favorite song (she was born in 1980) was Matthew Wilder's "Break My Stride" (from 1983), so it has a special place in my heart; I still have the 12" vinyl single. I also have a particular nostalgic fondness for 1976's "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck.

Regarding one of Aj's choices - Rupert Holmes was one of my musical heroes, several years before "Escape," "Him" and "Answering Machine." (To hear what he was truly capable of before trying to achieve pop success, find his first album, "Widescreen.")

I've had the pleasure of meeting him and conversing with him on a number of occasions. One story he likes to tell is when he meets people who then ask, "hey - aren't you the guy who did that Pina Colada song?" His standard reply is, "yes --- and I'm very sorry."

Re: Forgotten Songs from the 1970's and 1980's

I never hear Cheap Trick's "The Flame", but you know what is funny I heard "Your Love is Driving Me Crazy" on John Tesh's radio show a few weeks back which shocked me and this afternoon they played Climax "Precious & Few" on Oldies 107.9

I've not heard Eric Clapton's "I Can't Stand It" on radio in years, how about "I Got a Rock N Roll Heart"?

Not necessarily forgotten, but there are some songs you seldom hear on the radio, TV, or movies nowadays. Especially the "New Wave" stuff which, uhhh, doesn't sound so new anymore.

                  Pop Muzik - M
Putting On The Ritz - Taco
The Curly Shuffle - Jump 'n the Saddle
                  Smoke 2 Joints - Toyes
Pac Man Fever - Buckner & Garcia
                  Give It Up - K.C.
                  Der Kommissar - Falco
Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
The Politics of Dancing - Re-Flex
Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
                  American/Soviets - C.C.C.P.
Oh Daddy - Adrian Belew (ashamed to admit remembering this!)
                  Words - Missing Persons
(Keep Feeling) Fascination - Human League
                  Jeopardy - Greg Kihn Band
                  The Warrior - Patty Smyth

She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
An American Dream - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Hot Rod Hearts - Robbie Dupree
I Ain't Gonna Stand For It - Stevie Wonder (for some reason, this doesn't get played much anymore)
New York Groove - Ace Frehley/KISS
Don't Stop The Music - Yarbrough & Peoples

I used to have the 45 of Stella's Candy Store which was a transparent red vinyl disc. I haven't heard Diamond Head's "If That's The Way That You Want It" in a long time. I too like you have a vast collection of LPs, 45s and Cds.

Didn't the lead singer of Big Country hang himself at the Holiday Inn near the airport awhile back?

Great songs your coming up with, love many of them.

                      How about:

Try Again and How About Us by Champaign

Lost Without Your Love by Bread

                      Goodbye Girl by David Gates

Couldnt Get it Right or I Love You by Climax Blues Band (different vocalists on those songs)

This Time I'm in it for Love by Player

Your The Only Woman by Ambrosia

I Wont Hold You Back by Toto

                      Love Takes Time by Orleans

I Knew You Were Waiting For Me by Aretha Franklin and George Michael

On Friday or Saturday nights they have a 70's show on KSSK at night and I heard Nick Lowe's Cruel to be Kind and some others I hadnt heard in sometime.

Funny to see how many of these songs people are mentioning are ones that I still have on vinyl, and in many cases, as 12" remix or extended singles.

As for TutuSue's list --- it's almost as if she had been listening in when I was a jazz DJ in the late '70s/early '80s. Just need to add some Al Jarreau...

Here's Stella's Candy Store. Loved the colored single.

The song "If That's the Way You Want It" by Diamond Head is available on an excellent compilation CD put out by Norm Winter at Jelly's called "Long Lost Oldies Volume 3." The CD has a lot of tracks from the late 60s and 70s that were popular on Hawaii Top 40 radio back in the day.

Another compilation of older 70s tracks that I can recommend is "Island Summer 60s & 70s" which you can still find in some record stores. The disc was released about 4 years ago. Includes "Ebony Eyes" by The Stylistics, "Don't Say You Don't Remember" by Beverly Bremers, "Forever More" by Tokyo Happy Coats, "1900 Yesterday" by Liz Damon & the Orient Express, and "Remember Mary" by Sweet Marie among others.

Here's "Grovin' Out on Life" by The Newbeats:

This record was kind of a hit in Hawaii during the early part of 1970.

Someone also mentioned Rupert Holmes who is best known for writing and recording "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" which was a #1 hit in late 1979. He also recorded and released "Him" and "Answering Machine" in 1980.

My favorite 2 songs written by Rupert Holmes is "Timothy" and "Give Up Your Guns" recorded by the one hit album rock group, The Buoys in 1971. "Timothy" is supposedly a song about cannibalism which was discussed elsewhere on this board. I think "Give Up Your Guns" was the better song.

Here's a pic of The Buoys album:

A couple more forgotten tracks from the 1970s & 1980s:

Voices - Russ Ballard (1984) used in the Miami Vice TV series.

We Were Meant to be Lovers - Jim Photoglo (1980)
More To Love - Jim Photoglo (1980)

Tired of Toein' the Line - Rocky Burnette (1980)
Pilot of the Airwaves - Charlie Dore (1980)

Gimmie Some Slack - The Cars (1980) album track

                          Scorpio's Rising - 10,000 Maniacs (1985)

Hold On - Ian Gomm (1979)
Mirror Star - The Fabulous Poodles (1979)
                          Driver's Seat - Sniff & the Tears (1979)
Seaside Woman - Suzy & the Red Stripes (1978) - actually Linda McCartney with Wings / Paul

Mull of Kintyre - Paul McCartney & Wings (1977) - huge hit in England not quite in America. Great song.

Coming Up - Paul McCartney (1980 studio version)

Island of Lost Souls - Blondie (1982)
                          Sleepwalk - Ultravox (1980)
                          I'm still here. Are you?
