    It's plated with zinc (galvenised).

Canada says "Take off eh" to the penny.

A penny saved is a penny earned.
Quite often I see a penny sitting on the ground and am too busy to
        stop and pick it up.
Considering the large size of our nation, I wonder how much money that would
be if it were all found and counted.

Change itself, is the only constant.

                  Change is inevitable.

                  Except from a vending machine.

Works on radiator heat regulators though:

She slapped the radiator. "I overrode the governor on this ten minutes after they installed it. Everyone does it. They make it easy - you just stick a penny between the two contacts and hey presto, the city can't turn down your heat anymore. They wouldn't make it so easy if they didn't expect anyone to do it - and once everyone's done it, we're all guilty." *

It's already an alternate material. In mid-1982 the mint started making pennies out of zinc, plated with copper rather than using 95% copper- aka bronze.
Old copper pennies must be worth almost a nickel by now! Save them wheaties, and take 'em to the recycler!
