Another option is to use the Spanish or French language pre-recording announcement on your answering machine.

Brilliant! I was thinking Urdu might be good too.

Yep, the answering machine really screens 'em out--they just hang up--but sometimes I go all the way there to see who it is, only to hear dial tone. The other thing is to answer, let them start their spiel, then go, "hold on, please"...and set the receiver down and walk away!! They aren't gonna hang on forever...if you check it after a minute or so, either they're gone, and if they aren't, just hang up. They'll get the idea, and you haven't done anything rude or mean. Sometimes if you say you aren't interested, as you are hanging up, you can still hear them rambling on!

I let the answering machine pickup the line.
And my answering announcment is, "This line is registered against telemarketers." The phone has been very quiet for a coupla years now.

Does anyone else keep getting calls from a Center for Disease Control or sounding something like that doing a survey?

With Google Phone you can selectively redirect any caller to any recording such as, "I'm sorry this number is no longer in service...please redial the number you are calling...* 3-tones in rising sequence*..."
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

                Re: Telemarketers & Phone Surveys

When I get a phone call and if no one says hello immdiately or if I hear a hissing sound like tape rolling, I hang up. More than likely it is a junk, automated call. Can't stand them or any other junk phone call, even by non-profits or politicans or political parties. The number one reason you get any junk call is because the caller wants money and I don't give anyone money just because they called me.
                I'm still here. Are you?

I'm sorry, the number you have reached has been changed or is no longer in service. Please check the number you dialed and try your call again." Any person or well-designed auto-dialer software that got that message would probably take my number off their list.

I could just make it my outgoing message, but then valid callers would think my line was disconnected. I don't want that. I want to be able to look at my caller ID then press a button that would play that message. Does anyone know a way I could do that?
We used to have a phone that automatically played the first five notes of the disconnection message when you answered the phone, no matter who it was. Then you could choose to talk or not to talk. If you didn't speak, the automated dialers assumed it was a wrong # and would hang up. Your friends would just get used to it or a valid caller would hear your voice right away. I'll have to ask Jason where he got the phone. Can't use it anymore since we now have Vonage. Lately, I've just been picking up the phone and hanging it up.

Can't think of anything creative this time

Here's some wave and mp3 files of the disconnect tones. You just play the tones for the first part when you're recording your outgoing message, wait a few seconds and then give your real message.

Too bad the first link didn't have any GTE Hawaiian Tel or earlier. But otherwise it was quite comprehensive!

I'd like to add this gem to the mix:

Since we have gotten CALLER ID....... I loooooooooooove it!
You can filter out actual callers and the annoying ones who just dunno ht f-off
Saying you are on a do not call list just does not work, you can always threaten to sue cause I HAVE your # and you constantly call here constantly AGAIN = Lawsuit. They will pretty much get the idea.

Just had a phone survey call about the Bin Laden killing. But, I hanged up before answering the first question. Anybody did the phone survey?

Did anyone else received a phone message of a prerecorded message claiming to be from the IRS that I owe back taxes? The phone number is 213-674-4949.
