  • The new CPR - DO IT!

It's all about keeping blood = oxygen flowing to the brain. Lives are lost right in the middle of us all as we stand around looking or walk away as precious moments pass instead of doing a few, now even simpler, movements to save a life http://medicine.arizona.edu/spotligh...ompression-cpr

Only 5% of us know how to properly deliver CPR, about the same dismal percentage of people who register as organ donors. 5 stinking %...
How many thousands of lives have been needlessly lost because of such callous neglect?

Go forth, and may you never need to use it.

Re: The new CPR - DO IT!

While the hands-only CPR method simplifies things, it does have its limitations and is not substitute for full CPR. Per the American Red Cross:

How is full CPR different from hands-only CPR?

Full CPR combines rescue breaths with chest compressions and is the best option in some emergencies, including those involving infants and children, drowning victims, or people who collapse due to breathing problems.
Bottom line: If you can spare the extra time to learn full CPR (both chest compressions and rescue breaths), then go for it. It could make the difference between life and death for a young child, for whom administering chest compressions alone is not an option.

I agree. But not wasting precious time is the most important thing, keeping the blood flowing is #1.
Ultimately people need to do something helpful instead of letting someone die by doing nothing but maybe call 9-11 which will probably be too late. And with only 5% able to do any kind of CPR, it puts us all at high risk.

Obviously. And the better trained that people are in CPR, the more effective they will be in making use of that precious time until EMS arrrives.

All that I was saying was that if someone has the opportunity to be trained in full CPR, they should not pass it by and be complacent because of the hands-only CPR method.

If you're going to spend half an hour to learn hands-only CPR, what's another half-hour to learn rescue breathing that might save the life of an infant or a drowning victim?

Again, I agree, but at 5% every bit of help is better than none. People are now too adverse to mouth-to-mouth. Handling babies in emergencys like this is more complicated than 30/60 min. will allow for, and fortunately it's rare. Yet few parents would know the first thing about it. These things should be taught in elementary school.
