  • What are some of your favorite covers?

I sorta upon artists covering something, but I gotta admit that some of'em are just as good, or even better, than originals. Here's some of my favorites (strictly album productions--no county fair performances or karaoke gigs ):

"All I Do is Think of You" - The Jackson 5/ Troop
"Hard for Me to Say I'm Sorry" - Chicago/ Az Yet
"Betcha By Golly Wow" - The Stylistics/ Phyllis Hyman/ Three Plus
"Stop, Look, Listen (to Your Heart)" - The Stylistics/ Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross
    "Always & Forever" - Heatwave/ Luther Vandross

You Really Got Me - The Kinks>Van Halen
Waiting in Vain - Bob Marley>Maxi Priest
She Bangs - Ricky Martin>William Hung
          What a Wonderful World/Over the Rainbow Medley - Louis Armstrong/Judy Garland>Iz

Speaking of Braddah Iz, I remember just after he passed, a DJ mentioned that Iz said he wanted to do 'I Believe I Can Fly' by R. Kelly. If he were able to perform and publish that, I bet that have sounded "chicken skin" awesome and likely to become just as much a hit as Wonderful World.

There's so many songs of various genres that Iz could have covered and made them better than the original, with his soulful "nahenahe" voice and uke' accompaniments.

Just curious, how much do the original artists/writers usually get in sales royalties for rights to do covers of their music? Do some ever allow other artists to perform and publish their music royalty-free?

Uhhhh, isn't this list about favorite covers, not just "known" covers?

I could tell you some of the remakes I like (and who performed them), even though I don't know who originally performed the songs.

                              "Earth Angel" by New Edition.
"So Much in Love" by All-4-One (though I still prefer Michael B Smith version).
                              "One Summer Night" by All-4-One.
"In the Still of the Night" by Boyz II Men.
"Silhouette" by Fiji (or is it Sean Na'auao?).
"Love of a Lifetime" by Ten Feet.
                              Beijing 8-08-08 to 8-24-08

                              Tiananmen Square 4-15-89 to 6-04-89
