  • Sailin' Stories!

    Here's one...

I was up on(offshore of) Vancouver Island with a great friend Don. We were sailing his 28'er named "Happiness is". That particular morning we left from the southern tip of the island at a place called The Sydney Spit. As we headed north along the Eastern(inside) shore, we encountered fog. Coming to a Ferry crossing, Man those ships are big, we decided to do doughnuts(circles) and wait it out. Then we came close to shore and saw a private dock, tied up and had bacon and eggs for breakfast. We could hear the ferries, but with the echoes couldn't tell exactly where they were. The fog cleared from the North and when we could make out the silhouettes we took off and discovered that there was another ten or so boats out there waiting also. Beautiful sailing ensued and saw lots of Sea Lions and one cliffside that had over 150 Bald Eagles, too cool! Later that day we anchored at Decorsey Island in Pirates Cove and went hiking.

Okay that's the first story. Please share yours.

    Re: Sailin' Stories!

In 1994 I had the great fortune to participate in the Pan Pacific Yacht Race which started at various ports in several countries all finishing in Osaka, Japan. The Los Angeles/Osaka run, which was the one I sailed, was the longest of the race. We were at sea for near 40 days and logged 7300 nautical miles on the way which took us southwest from California, south of the Hawaiian Islands and thence northwest to Japan. By far the hardest thing I have ever done and save for my son, my proudest accomplishment.

Thanks for starting the thread and for the story!
I already mentioned in the other thread about sailing a 7' dinghy across 32 miles of open ocean, so here's a photo taken by the escort boat near the end of the sail, finally in calm water after the big waves in the channel:

This isn't a personal sailing story, but... if you want to see some gorgeous photos of Paul Allen's 416' yacht, go to http://www.yachtcrew-cv.com/paulallen.htm . There's one photo right there, but five paragraphs down is a link to a powerpoint file with 50 photos. Ohmygawd!

Full time crew of 60, including several ex Seals for security... not one but two helicopters... annual maintenance budget of $2 million... 10-man submarine... eight 2,400hp Mercedes engines... fuel capacity of 225,000 gallons (about 1.5 million pounds; fill up the tanks for around $800,000)... Ohmygawd!

That's really choice LikaNui ! Is that an El Toro? I used to have 7' 6" Fatty Knees that I sailed around in Keehi Lagoon. Good fun in the little boats, eh!

              Here's another one...

I used to work as First Mate aboard "The Barefoot 1" A.K.A.- Captain Bob's Picnic Sail, out of Heeia Kea Boat Harbor in Kaneohe Bay. It's a heavy built 42' catameran. We would motor out to the sandbar to play volleyball and serve them hamburger lunches. Then sail along from there to a coral head to snorkle. After that we would sail back to the harbor. Most fun job I ever had. Well one day....
I was sailing us homeward when I ran us right up on a small peninsula of sand at full sail. We were stuck! No damage, just scrubbed the vegetation off the undersides. I had to get the tourists, about 35 of them, to get off the boat onto the sandbar so I could reverse off and lightly touch again to pick them up. Oh My! After that my crewmates always teased me... "There's Jeff's Spot!"

              Okay, who's story is next?

No, but it's almost an identical twin to an El Toro. It's called a Sydney Sabot.

                Love that classic-looking lapstrake design.

Thanks for sharing your stories and pictures. I've never gone sailing. Only seen in movies and t.v. Maybe someday ~ I'll have an opportunity to experience the beauty in which it brings...

                  ...ahh, the joy of dreaming.

                    Re: Sailin' Stories!

missed opportunity: my two favorite things; shooting and sailing. a friend of mine who had a good size sailboat, I would say somewhere around the 50 ft neighborhood, said he and his crew were going to sail to Palmyra, and would i like to come along, take my Sony, shoot the trip to, from and there. And later edit it. I just couldn't tear myself away from obligations at the time. Damn.
That would have made a very cool documentary.
So I heard all about it after. very cool adventure. would have been better had i been there.... ah well...

Sorry you missed the trip, Kimo, but I'll bet you've got some great video footage just from sailing around here, eh?
And I'm sure you and the other sailing fans here are aware of the round-the-world race going on right now ( www.volvooceanrace.org ), so check out this spectacular 30-second video of the Disney boat flying at 25+ knots: http://www.piratesracing.org/Chopper_Pirates.mov .

                        Re: Sailin' Stories!

I met these two brothers from South Africa. Sorry guys, I can't remember your names at the moment. They were sailing around the world aboard a funky but very stout sailboat named "Deja Vu". One day I went sailing with them. We left from Keehi Lagoon and had a terrific summertime sail to Waikiki. After we anchored, we took the inflatable tender that was in tow, into shore. We were told that was illegal so just anchored it abit offshore to comply. The three of us then met three lovely and friendly ladies who were adventurous enough to go sailing with us. It took a few trips to ferry everyone out to Deja Vu. We sailed out, around Diamond Head and into the Moloka'i Channel. Ate a choice dinner. We were prepared! And then had a wonderful sunset sail back to Keehi. After everyone got cleaned up we used my vehicle, (the old Keehi Marine Center truck) to head back to Waikiki. Stopping by the ladies hotel so they could get dressed up and we all went out dancing, etc. The story continues but I think that's enough. Besides it's a Sailin' Story, remember.

                            What's your pleasure?

Racing stories (local, Pacific Cup, TransPac), or cruising (Tahiti, Marquesas, Tuamotos, Fiji, Samoa, Christmas, Palmyra)? I have my share, but they never seem as interesting when shared ashore.
