I didn't hear any sirens yet but there was an emergery alert issued on the TV saying that there is Tsunami Warning in effect for the state of Hawaii.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has the details. It is expected to arrive around 10:28 pm tonight.

      Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

      EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

      1028 PM HST SAT 27 OCT 2012

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

At this point the waves are predicted to be only 3' to 7' high. But still, stay away from the shorelines.
Tsunami waves pull water out to sea, which makes people want to walk out there... but then the big waves come IN and those people are toast.
And even if the waves are small, there can be very nasty currents up to 24 hours or more after the initial waves.

I wonder whether I'm in a tsunami inundation zone. (Famous last words.) The maps in the phone book and on line are rather vague -- our house is somewhere around the line that marks off the coastal zone, but I can't really tell. I guess I'll just cross my fingers.

                          The Oct. 27 Tsunami Warning

How was the tsunami for you? Did it happen? Mainland news of it has been kind of sketchy and conflicting. From here it looks like it was kind of a non-event: Good!! Hope all went well.

Oops, I see this topic has already been posted elsewhere. Sorry.

All is well. It got lowered from a tsunami warning to a tsunami advisory about 1:30am. Reports are the that the biggest waves were over on the Big Island, where one of the harbors was seeing 4' waves every six minutes for a while.
All our thoughts and prayers now head over to the mainland's east coast and Hurricane Sandy.

When in doubt, wait it out?

Sounds like solid advice to me.
