  • What's the most viruses you've removed?

The previous record for me was 90 viruses on someone who didn't have any antivirus protection, but today, I had to stop my AV scanner and change some settings, and NOD32 found 352 viruses (all of the allaple.gen variant)

(the bad news, is that I can't reformat because client lost his copy of XP)
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

So, what's the solution? Another copy of XP?

Does your client have his serial number? Then all you have to do is find a retail copy and use that. I do have a XP 10 in 1 DVD disk where it has all versions of XP and is bootable.

Makes life easy when I make house calls and have to reload a clients OS.

Yes, he has the serial, but it looks like its an OEM version.

I can say the same for Linux - especially ones on LiveCD.

Hmmmm, how are you counting? It sounds like the number of infected files. That's really not a good measure. That can be a single infection that's spread to multiple files.

I'd rather count the number of different viruses on the same box.

So how long was this computer running without the use of anti-virus software?

I remember the day when Macs were the only ones to get viruses. Schools were an absolute nightmare. DOS was too stupid to be doing a "autorun" when a disk was inserted, so it was hard to write a DOS virus. Even if you had a floppy with an infected boot sector virus, you had to accidentally try and boot off the floppy to get infected.

Now as far as viruses - if you were to catch a cold, would you rather catch a common cold or something exotic?

Oh, and the number of viruses on my machines in the past few years? Zero. Firewalls rule!

it had AVG, but it looked like it was disabled.

939 from one computer. The owner complained to me his computer took over half an hour to boot up to the desktop and ran like a slug once it did boot up.

He was about to toss out his computer when I told him to let me look at it. I ran the virus scan from AVG and as soon as it got to the registry scan the count soared. When it got to the temp files it soared again.

He confessed he frequented many MANY porn sites.

Needless to say a fresh install with a new OEM XP Home disk brought his computer back from the grave.
