    Re: Tsunami Alert for 08/15/07

    The PTWC issued bulletin #3...

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. WE HAVE OBSERVED
A TSUNAMI SIGNAL ON THE DEEP OCEAN GAUGE OFF NORTHERN CHILE.
A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG
COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO
    MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

Hawaii currently remains under advisory status.

For heaven's sake! Must this forum always digress to blaming everything on the malihini???

J/K. Group hugs to all. Be safe.

Check out the Disaster Preparedness Guide (yellow section) in the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages to see if you are in an area likely to be impacted by a tsunami.

Luckily we couldn't afford ocean front property.
I saw that, but I didn't want to assume they had a phone book if they haven't gotten the cable in yet.

Ah, who the hell cares if ya did. Much ado about nothing, in retrospect. Life is too damn short (but hopefully lasting a bit longer than approximately 0200, 8/16/07).

Wow. I am waxing pseudo-philosophical. Not a good sign.

Should I hele on over to the Official Apology Thread and prostrate myself? Atone for any and all sins, real or imagined?

How much advance notice is there to evacuate ? Do they use a siren ?

Some help on this please, my wife is freaking out.
Were you planning to evacute your home during Flossie because of sea water was about to overrun your place? If so then you should plan to evacute your place. Take the important papers and stuff. Hope you got your radio handy.

And yes that is purpose of the sirens to warning incoming Tsunamis and the reason for the monthly test on the first working day of the month.

On a more humorous note, what is left, natural disaster-wise?

                      hurricanes? check
                      earthquakes? check
                      tsunamis?....

Thanx everyone for the helpful info. Thankfully, as stated above, the advisory is cancelled.

I guess it serves me right for suggesting a "Flossie joke thread" in the Hurricane Flossie thread.

Also, I'm like 3 blocks out of the Evacuation area, according to the map in the phone book. Not that THAT makes me feel any more comfortable.

It's been a hellish few days as far as Ma nature goes.

Here in Hawai`i, we average one tornado every year and a half, as you can see here in records from 1950 through 1995.
I recall many of those, and several since then too, including this one on O`ahu on January 26, 2004 (see photo below) and this one on Lana`i on March 25, 2006, as well as others. And that doesn't include several waterspouts (usually stronger than tornadoes) each and every year.
Write this down -- one tornado in Hawai`i every year and a half.

Nah, think of it as a welcoming committee. Or maybe some motivation for that second CD?

Yes, if there is a tsunami threat, they will sound the sirens. In fact, that's the primary reason they installed them. Might want to study up on the April 1, 1949 Tsunami

Yea, Eartquake, Hurricane, Tsunami advisory...in 3 days...Welcome to hawaii.

I was starting to look up the Hilo Tsunamis on Google. Also, I was thinking I need to spend the $7 to go to the tsunami Museum 2 blocks away.

Somehow this will indeed inspire SOMETHING for the next CD.
