Or just maybe these guys have some class. You don't win friends by antagonizing people. Something the Hotel workers could learn.

And it looks like they’ll have the opportunity to do that in a big way. Sen. Sam Slom and Rep. Gene Ward are holding a town hall meeting tonight to discuss alternatives to “Foodland’s abrupt departure” from Hawai‘i Kai. In a Honolulu Star-Advertiser article, Foodland continues to point out it matched Walgreen’s position in most aspects of negotiations. In my view, this amounts to penny-wise and pound-foolish thinking on the part of Koko Marina’s arrogant California-based majority owner Abraham Keh. Their strategy for keeping quality tenants in the shopping center has failed dismally over the past 10 years. Just look at the former Blockbuster space.

Foodland closing is 'a done deal'
The Koko Marina Center owner says Walgreens is coming despite protests

The owner of Koko Marina Shopping Center said Walgreens moving into Foodland Super Market Inc.’s Hawai‘i Kai location is a done deal, despite community opposition that is expected to culminate at a town-hall meeting tonight ...

... “There is no negotiations — this is a done deal,” said Abraham Keh, Koko Marina’s majority owner based in California. “Basically both parties had equal opportunity to make their best offers and to stay or not. (Walgreen Co.) had a more competitive offer.”

Walgreen also agreed to make $3 million in improvements to the roughly 33,000-square-foot site, he said. Foodland said it had agreed to a similar deal to make those improvements over several years.

We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.

Sam Slom and Gene Ward, of all people? Hey, I thought those guys were Republicans. You know, the party that says that govt. should keep their mits out of people's private affairs and regulate as little as possible? The folks who try to slash the budgets of public school and social services in the name of reducing the size and scope of govt. So what are those guys doing now? Selling out their principles to pander for a few votes in their district? BUSTED!!!

I hereby declare Sam Slom and Gene Ward to be RINOS (Republicans In Name Only).

Comes down to pretty simple difference: who get bettah poke, Walgreens or Foodland?

In that case, hand that lease over to Tamashiro Market.

Yeah, well, Foodland didn't match Walgreen in the one single aspect that matters the most.

              KHON 2

Sources say Walgreens, which has signed a lease for this 32,000 square foot space, agreed to pay 15% more than Foodland.
              Walgreen's bid 15% higher.

Now what is it that you, Slom, and Ward can't understand about the decision the landlord is making? Or have you guys suddenly forsaken the idea of free-market capitalism?

Better be careful of what you say, boys. Otherwise, you might find yourself being branded as an Obama socialist at the next Tea Party rally at the state capitol.

Checked out the new flagship store across from Ala Moana Center. I like the building's design, but I guess many don't.

I like the new store. The design looks most impressive at night.

The thing looks rather hideous and out of place, but we're stuck with it. Worse, yesterday I heard on HPR's The Conversation an architect http://hpr2.org/post/uhero-construct...vaastu-shastra (last 3rd) touting how the look represents this and that cultural aspects. I had to laff. If it was next to the Convention Center maybe it would fit in better, and in 25 years maybe the surroundings will accomodate as new buildings replace the old and we dissenters die off.

Currently the chain seems to be on an expansion rush in Hawaii mainly because I think it is trying to drive CVS out of the market. Both stores seem to be expanding in Hawaii.

The latest Walgreen's to open in Honolulu is one at Market City Shopping Center where the Fernandez Fun Factory used to be.

Remains to be seen if any Hawaii stores will close.

If you can find a Walgreens location. What happened to their many locations?

Walgreens to close 5 more S.F. stores citing 'organized retail crime' (yahoo.com)

The same problem of the five fingers discount was just as bad in SF as in Hawaii. I'm thinking of the former Downtown Walgreens where you can spock an obvious shoplifter just by their physical appearance from the bus stop.
