  • Places in Hawaii You Can't Go

A fellow Yelp user recently started a discussion on "10 Places You Can't Go In Hawaii", based on a VERY INTERESTING! article she read in Honolulu Magazine.

The forbidden places mentioned in that article are:
1.) The Inner Workings of the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels
    2.) Moiliili’s underground caves
    3.) The (FHB) Bankers Club
4.) The USS Hawaii (a nuclear sub based at Pearl)
5.) Kukio (a private golf course on the Big Island)
6.) The Highest Roof in the State (on top of the FHB building in downtown, Honolulu)
7.) The Red Hill Underground Fuel-Storage Facility
    8.) Doris Duke's Bedroom, Shangri-La
    9.) Puuwai, Niihau
10.) The Bank of Hawaii Operations Center

If there's any place on this list I'd most be interested in seeing, it would be the Red Hill Underground Fuel-Storage Facility. According to the article, ever since 9/11/01, the facility has been locked down, and today virtually no civilians are granted access.

I heard a rumor that there's also a "James Bond-like" ocean-side cave on the north side of Kaneohe Marine Base that serves as a submarine station. Can anyone chime in on that one?

Then there's the (supposedly now inactive) nuclear storage site over by Kolekole Pass. My friend told me those were actually nuclear missile SILOS there, pointing toward China, Russia and N. Korea, but not sure if that was/is true.

Here's an interesting and informative link about the Oahu Moili'ili Karst Formation Caves.

I WAS NOT aware such a thing existed! Learn something new every day, I tell 'ya.

I hope this doesn't lead to sink holes!

I seem to recall that the bedroom at Shangri-La is now open. and you CAN go to the FHB Bankers Club - but you have to be invited there.

Submarine cave. I heard of that rumor from KMCAS Marines, but not from anyone who had SEEN it.

There is an underground hospital carved into the crater/mountain at KMCAS. Friends have been there and had photos to prove it.

There are still nuclear silos makai of Kolekole pass. You can find them with Google Earth. Active? Probably.

The keyword being INVITED. The point of that article is that these places are otherwise not accessible to the general public unless you have proper clearance and authorization (by human beings).

Obviously there's really very few places in Hawaii (or anywhere in the world for that matter) that you can't go if government control and authority weren't a factor. Like say near the vent while Kilauea volcano is erupting. Ouch!

Yes, I agree. But, private locations are just that - private. They should have said "locations that the general public can't visit". I paid to go to Shangri-la and we were escorted into the bedroom.

no, I don't think it was "TMI" = its not like anyone is currently sleeping in that room!

I recall reading in an article published in Hawaiian Airlines' "Hana Hou" Magazine last December, in which the author reported the overall experience of climbing to the highest peaks of each of the Hawaiian Islands, that Mt. Kaala, the highest point on Oahu, was inaccessable to the general public, due to some sort of highly-secured government installation.

That's a satellite tracking station, I think. My scoutmaster worked there.

I really want bike access to the road they built in order to construct H3. FatJeff says there's no way legally to go.

                        You are talking Halawa Valley?
Buzz1941 and I tried to get access to investigate the magnetic anomaly on H-3 PH of the tunnels, and were refused. (Trumped-up reason = landslides!)
However, I understand that Native Hawaiians can get permission to go there for 'worship' or 'cultural practice' purposes, as there are heiau along the valley in addition to the one that was buried.
However, it's only a chain across the road - you can lift a bike over it, and I didn't see any "No Trespassing" signs.

Access via the cement plant. Bring a compass, and let me know if it works right on the valley floor.

Also the underground hangar and take-off facility in Halawa Valley.

I've been to a heiau below the freeway on the town side, or at least to a spot that was said to be a heiau, about 12 or so years ago while H3 was under construction. I think I might have photos. It was littered with rubbish and junk and a battered picnic table. It was pathetically filthy. Done by modern day humans.

I wouldn't get all jumpy over seeing a submarine just because it bears the state name. Just another metal tube with gadgets and weapons, and sometimes they work.
